  • Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say (XII)

Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say (XII)

    By Segun Omolayo

We must have shared with you before the story of a friend who asked this columnist to meet him at a place he described as “adjacent the state hospital.” It turned out that what he meant was opposite the state hospital.

But that was after sweating for 15 minutes searching in vain for him and working the phone forlornly, as the networks were forever unavailable. And when eventually found, the ptofessor-friend went livid, hollering: “But I told you to find me adjacent the state hospital.”

Letting him know that he had said what he hadn’t meant, that adjacent meant by the side of, not opposite, he said, o ti o (no o!). It took consultations on the mobile phone dictionary to convince him of the meaning of the adjective adjacent.

That is how important it is to ensure you choose the appropriate words, terms, phrases and expressions to convey your messages accurately, without the kind of stress the two friends went through because of the malapropian mistake of wrongly using one word for another.

So, we will converse some more on the imperative of always saying what you mean and meaning what you say. As usual we will use live examples of how one writer or another has fallen short. Take a critical look at the statement below:

    • At the onset of the radio programme, the land commissioner emphasized the increase in land disputes.

“Misused in this statement is the noun onset in place of the more appropriate word outset. Because this error is now a pandemic, we should explain the difference between these words and in their respective usages.

Onset means “the beginning of something, especially something unpleasant: the onset of disease/old age/winter” (Oxford Advanced Lerner’s Dictionary, Eighth Edition, as cited in “Pop” Errors). Outset, on the other hand, is defined simply as “the start, beginning” (Webster’s Universal Dictionary & Thesaurus).

And there is an idiom deriving from it, which runs thus: “at/from the outset,” meaning “at/from the beginning of something” (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, as also cited in “Pop” Errors). The similarity in the meanings of the two words notwithstanding, we should note that onset is associated with something unpleasant, whereas outset is not.

This difference is what conditions the usage, and because of that, it is never correct to apply onset as used in the sentence, as a radio programme is nothing unpleasant. Here goes the correct usage:

    • At the outset of the radio programme, the land commissioner emphasized the increase in land disputes.

We will take another example still involving onset and outset, viz:

    • At the onset of the meeting, the superintendent expressed gratitude to the security agencies.

Just as a radio programme cannot be an unpleasant thing, a meeting cannot also be ordinarily considered as something unpleasant. So, onset is not appropriate in respect of the beginning of a meeting.

It is simply the same mistake made in a different setting. We hinted a long time ago that it is the nature of common mistakes (pop errors) that we all tend to make the same mistakes in different ways. Regarding the instance of a meeting, the correct usage is:

    • At the outset of the meeting, the superintendent expressed gratitude to the security agencies.

The more mindless and careless writers get in the choice of words, the more outrageous their errors tend to become. Otherwise, why should someone write a bewildering sentence such as the following?

    • Some residents of the city were made homeless when their houses were raged in the ongoing road construction.

Here is what our writers’ companion, “Pop” Errors, has to say about the above bizarre construction: On close scrutiny, the use of the word raged in this sentence pops off as one of those strange inventions that malapropism tends to produce.

The writer leaves the reader guessing, drawing from experience and common sense, that he is perhaps talking of destruction of houses, using raged instead of razed. To raze is “to completely destroy a building, town, etc. so that nothing is left.”

We should thus substitute the word raged with razed. And, indeed, the word destroyed or demolished, either a simpler or more familiar word, should deliver the message considerably better. See the correction below:

    • Some residents of the city were made homeless when their houses were demolished in the ongoing road construction.

Sometimes, the love of bombasts can complicate otherwise simple communication, as in:

    • The families agreed to avail the land documents for the technical appraisal.

To be sure, there are better ways of communicating the intended message of the above statement. It is a matter of correct diction, that is, appropriate words or terms that convey meaning easily and accurately. As used in the above sentence, the word avail is sheer malapropistic bombast, conveying no meaning.

“Available synonyms indicate that it is a comical and confusing misuse for another more appropriate word. Here are some of the synonyms: benefit, fill, fulfill, meet, profit, satisfy, serve, suffice and work (Roget’s Thesaurus as cited in “Pop” Errors), none of which can convey the meaning intended – just like avail itself.”

We will therefore simply replace avail with the verb provide and “see the meaning pop up:”

    • The families agreed to provide the land documents for the technical appraisal.

In the correction, there can’t be any doubt about the meaning of the message.

A business is a gateway for a business owner’s success, partly I might say. For a brand’s recognition and success, there is a mastermind and brain behind every accomplishment.

With this in mind, Seyi Agboola, otherwise known as ‘SeyiDavid’, an extraordinary multifaceted businessman, set up the creative leather brand ‘The Itele Footwear’.

According to him, he started the shoe business from his imaginary world of fashion which did not die in fantasy but brought his dream to life after he discontinued his tertiary education. He pursued his shoemaking and leather craft career when people thought that shoemaking was a low standard occupation.

Seyi Agboola used his skills in grooming the Itele brand and has successfully shaped the shallow ideas people had about shoemakers.

He sees his organization as one of the largest leather brands in the world out of Nigeria and would not do any other business. Instead, he derives joy from making shoes, and would still want to lay his hands on his tools and kick the ball rolling.

Nigeria gets first calibration centre in West Africa

    Moses Emorinken, Abuja

The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has commissioned its National Laboratory Equipment Calibration Centre.

The calibration centre, which is the first of its kind in West Africa sub-region, will ensure quality of equipment or instruments and ancillary products involved in the process of serving the end-user is not compromised.

Also, the MLSCN received its accreditation certification by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) to the National External Quality Assessment Laboratory (NEQAL).

Minister of State for Health, Adeleke Mamora, said: “This is a milestone which I believe will go a long way in strengthening Medical Laboratory science Council of Nigeria towards the actualization of its statutory mandate. This regulatory agency has been one of those driving the culture of quality in the health sector in line with the federal government’s policy on health.

“By embarking on the daunting but laudable task of accreditation by the South African National Accreditation Service, you are leading by example and showing that you clearly understand what the process requires.

“From such a humble beginning, the National External Quality Assessment Laboratory has grown into a flagship facility driving high standards through proficiency testing by in-laboratory comparison.

“It has shown how the narrative of unreliable and inaccurate laboratory testing can be changed with determination and unwavering commitment towards higher ideals through a pragmatic and inclusive model that recognises the pre-eminent place of the critical stakeholders, the service users, the management of MLSCN has been able to inspire confidence in its external quality assessment framework.

“Deservedly, therefore, the transformation of the processes and procedures used at your facility, the national external quality assessment laboratory at Saye, Zaria, has earned itself a global recognition through the presentation of the ISO 170432010 certificate of accreditation”.

The Registrar and CEO of the MLSCN, Dr. Tosan Erhabor, said: “Before now we were not having an accredited facility in West Africa, now we have one here in Nigeria. Therefore, any panel that we produce has international standard, and can be used anywhere in the world.

“Now that a lot of our facilities have keyed into it, those that are not doing well will know that they fall short of international standards, and can take corrective actions to make sure that Nigeria people get the adequate and quality results we want them to have.

“Concerning the calibration centre, no matter how professional you are, if your equipment is not dispensing what it is supposed to or the certification is not complete, the result you will be getting will be bad”.

Declare emergency on education, Fed Govt urged

    Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

The Managing Director of Kresta Laurel Limited, Mr Dideolu Falobi,  has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on the education sector.

He charged  the Federal Government to revamp the sector through the provision of infrastructure, better funding, inexpensive fees, quality remuneration for staff among others.

He made this call at the 13th Convocation Ceremony of the Lagos City Polytechnic, held in LTV premises on Thursday.

Dideolu, while delivering the convocation lecture entitled, ‘Enhancing the Standard of Tertiary Education in Nigeria’, identified inadequate funding, brain drain, instability of academic calendar, cultism, drug abuse among  others as vice that had hampered tertiary education in Nigeria.

He said: “The enhancement of the standards of education in Nigeria at all level is the responsibility of all stakeholders including and not limited to the parents, students, promoters, institutions management, staff and the regulatory authorities.

“Everybody must identify and play his role. However, the Federal Government must declare a state of emergency in the educational sector. The level of decadence is  too high. The children that are not trained might not allow those that are trained  to live in peace, hence, the future and time is ripe for the government to act,” he added.

He said education remained the bedrock of any nation’s development, adding that, declaring  a state of emergency in the sector would help  in saving the future of the youth and all relevant stakeholders.

He noted that education remains  a powerful weapon that provides individual freedom and empowerment and yields important benefits.

Dideolu said the allocated funds budgeted for education in 2020 is not sufficient and healthy for the economy.

He said: “In the 2020 budget as analysed by BudgiT, the approved budget is N10.59 trillion with a deficit of N2.18trillion. Of this, N2.47 trillion was allocated to recurrent expenditure while N4.49 trillion was allocated to capital expenditure. Of this amount, N706 billion was budgeted for education which represents 6.67%. This is not healthy for the economy. Whereas, UNESCO’s benchmark for education is 26% of the annual national budget”

He advised the graduands to pursue excellence at all times while  improving  the society.

The Chairman, Governing Council, Lagos City Polytechnic, Mr Babatunde Odufuwa, said the institution graduated 658 students, comprising 264 National Diploma holders and 394 Higher National Diploma.

The 658 were from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences as well as the School of Business and Management Studies.

The institution however presented a Honorary Fellowship Award  to Dideolu and Dr Adelaja Omofade for their outstanding contributions to education development.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mrs Abosede Adelaja, in his keynote address  enjoined graduands to be worthy ambassadors of the school and the state, adding that, their various professions were crucial to the development of the state.

The Acting Rector of the institution, Mr Oluseye Adebiyi, advised graduands to  impact  their chosen field with good legacies.
