  • Pope Francis apologises for swatting well-wisher’s hand

    Agency Report

POPE Francis has apologised for swatting away the hand of a woman, who tugged his arm as the head of the Roman Catholic Church greeted pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on New Year’s Eve.

In video of the incident, Francis walks down a line of admirers separated by fencing, clasping their hands, waving and smiling with the basilica and the Vatican obelisk in the background.

Just as the Pope appears to turn to walk away from the crowd, a woman reaches out, grabs his hand and then jerks him forcefully toward her.

Francis immediately recoils and swats at her hand to free himself as the pope’s security detail also moves to intervene.

In his new year’s wishes to the public in St. Peter’s Square yesterday, Francis confessed to losing his patience with the woman.

In his impromptu remarks, Francis said “so many times we lose patience. Me, too.” He then added, “I say ‘excuse me’ for the bad example.”

The woman made the sign of the cross just before the incident. It’s not clear what she said to the pope as she grabbed him.

Earlier the same day, Francis had attended the private funeral of a friend, showing up without notice at the Roman parish of San Giuseppe al Nomentano to pay his respects to María Grazia Mara, the Vatican said, confirming reports in Italian media.

Mara, a professor emerita at the Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome, died Monday at 95. She was a noted scholar of the history and theology of the Roman Catholic Church’s founders whom Francis visited at her home in 2018 and then singled out for special praise during a visit to the college in early 2019.

  • Alleged car theft: Court gives Naira Marley ‘last chance’ to appear

    By Robert Egbe

A Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday gave a musician, Azeez Fashola, popularly called Naira Marley, till January 14 to appear in court for arraignment for alleged car theft.

Magistrate Mr. Tajudeen Elias warned Marley that if he failed to show up, a bench warrant would be issued for his arrest.

The chief magistrate made the order in the trial of Marley’s two brothers, Idris Fashola, 18, Babatunde Fashola, 24, and their cousin, Kunle Obere, 22.

The defendants are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, assault and obstructing the police from arresting Marley.

They were arraigned on December 16, but Marley, the fourth defendant, was absent.

The court granted the trio N500,000 bail each with two sureties in the like sum.

Elias ordered the Investigative Police Officer (IPO) to produce Marley in court on Tuesday for further hearing.

But at the commencement of proceedings, only the three other defendants entered the dock.

The court declined to let the trial begin.

“I made an order that Azeez Fashola should be in court today,” Chief Magistrate Elias told Marley’s counsel, Mr. Awokulehin Ayodeji.

    “Where is he?”

Responding, Awokulehin said Marley was abroad.

“He is not even in the country as we speak. It is because of the Christmas break,” he said.

But the court rejected the excuse.

Elias said: “He is aware the case is coming up today, so, why will he travel?”

Turning to the registrar, he said: “Bring the warrant of arrest.”

The Nation reports that Marley is said to have held his widely publicised year-end concert tagged ‘Marlian Fest’ on Monday at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

But Awokulehin pleaded for more time to present Marley. He pledged that the defendant would be available at the next adjourned date.

Awokulehin said: “Your honour, I can assure you that a warrant of arrest won’t be needed. The sole reason my client is not here today is really because of the Yuletide. He will be here at the next adjourned date.”

Accepting his prayer, Mr. Elias declined to proceed with the arrest warrant.

He said: “I order that Azeez Fashola be produced forthwith. Case adjourned till January 14,2020.”

At the their arraignment on December 16, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Edet Okoi, told the court that the three defendants committed the offence on December 15, at Eko Hotel Roundabout, Victoria Island, Lagos.

He alleged that the trio, while in a motorcade with Marley, stole a Toyota Camry vehicle with registration No. FEE 120 AA, valued at N1.8 million and an IPhone X5 worth N330,000, belonging to Mr. Adelekan Ademola.

The court heard that the three defendants and others at large assaulted the complainant by beating him up.

Okoi alleged that the second defendant, Babatunde Fashola and others at large obstructed the police while performing their duty and prevented them from arresting Naira Marley.

He said: “One of the vehicles in the musician’s motorcade hit the complainant’s vehicle from the back while he was throwing out money from his vehicle to his fans.

“When the complainant came down from the vehicle to inspect the damage, Obere entered the complainant’s Camry and drove it off with the motorcade. Ademola reported to the police and the vehicle was tracked to where it was parked at Jakande Crescent, Oniru in Lagos.

“When the police arrived at the location in company of the complainant, Naira Marley and his boys started beating the complainant.

“A group of boys obstructed the police from arresting the musician, but they were able to apprehend the three defendants.”

He said the offences contravened sections 112, 172, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

At a well-attended Fundraising and Awards Dinner in Lagos, chairman, AAU Alumni association Lagos Chapter, Mr. Chris Iyere decried the preventable deaths and loss of lives in the university community as a result of the poor state of the health centre on the campus.

Iyere said a visit to the health centre revealed that the facility was operating with obsolete equipment, some dating back to the 80s when it was established.

“It is appalling that students are still dying due to common malaria as there is no modern diagnostic equipment for proper tests.  The building is in a shambles; no beddings in the wards. • School board appreciates headteachers

    By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie

THE end of year party for head teachers of public primary schools in Lagos State held Monday was their red carpet event for the year.

Beyond being an annual event by the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) to appreciate their hard work managing the state’s 1,016 public primary schools, it provided opportunity for the head teachers to reconnect with old friends who once worked together as teachers in the same school; and interact with government functionaries in charge of education in the state.

The head teachers who were mostly women, turned up at the Grandeur event centre, Oregun, dressed to their nines in lace fabrics and aso-oke colour-coded according to their Local Government Education Authority (LGEA).  Each LGEA dressed to out-do the other.  Many  jettisoned the traditional iro and buba styles more popular with older women for chic skirts and blouse/gown styles.

It turned out that they had been planning for their attire the entire year.

Head Teacher of Maharuf-deen Primary School, Bariga, Somolu, Mrs Morayo Adebao, said the teachers  contributed monthly towards purchasing the clothes.

“We want to look kinky.  We don’t want the young ones to push us out.  We have been contributing from the beginning of the year.  The fabric cost N20,000, while the gele (head tie) cost N6,000. When we went to Lagos for the fabric, we asked the colour that was trending and were told emerald,” said Mrs. Adebayo.

Another head teacher, Mrs. Grace Ekunniyi of Salvation Army Primary School, Ilogbo Eremu , Badagry, said the fabric for Badagry LGEA cost N15,000.

“We contributed N1,500 monthly for about 10 months.  We normally plan for it because we know it is coming,” she said.

Chairman, Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Lagos Wing, Adedoyin Adesina, thanked the Lagos SUBEB for organizing the programme yearly, and carrying teachers along in its decision making process.

“I thank the Board for their open door policy and consultation.  The issues we have been pursuing about the non-teaching staff that the qualified ones among them be converted to teaching staff, which they have approved for us,” he said.

In his remarks, chairman, Lagos SUBEB, Wahab Alawiye-King, thanked the teachers for their hard work.

“All the successes we have recorded in our schools in the course of the year are predominantly du to your commitment and hard work,” he said.

The Chairman said the head teachers had a crucial role to play in the success of the state’s EkoEXCEL technology-based initiative as they would serve as monitors and evaluators.

“EkoEXCEL just started and the most important thing for the head teacher is to be able to monitor and evaluate the programme from time to time.  They have different ways of monitoring.  They will not use the summation appraisal at the end of the programme; they would do a continuous assessment.  When you do that you see the result from time to time and you can make changes,” he said.
