S.O Ogbemudia, who we all know developed the infrastructure we now have as Edo and Delta.“Let me tell you, whether you like it or not, the two governors are in their mid 50s; they all witnessed the administration of Ogbemudia in Midwest and Bendel state. So, they know what it takes to develop ones state.“If I look round today, Benin city is taking a new shape in terms of roads, schools. Al-Qaida says US consulate attack ‘revenge’
Al-Qaeda has described the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya as a revenge for the killing of the network’s number two Sheikh Abu Yahya al-Libi.“The killing of Sheikh Abu Yahya only increased the enthusiasm and determination of the sons of (Libyan independence hero) Omar al-Mokhtar to take revenge upon those who attack our Prophet,” SITE Intelligence Group, a US-based monitoring organisation quoted al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula as saying in a statement.Al-Qaida’s Yemen-based offshoot did not claim direct responsibility for Tuesday’s attack on the US consulate in Benghazi that killed the US ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three other Americans. But it stressed that “the uprising of our people in Libya, Egypt and Yemen against America and its embassies is a sign to notify the United States that its war is not directed against groups and organisations … but against the Islamic nation that has rebelled against injustice.”The statement came four days after al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahiri issued a video eulogising Libi, his late deputy and propaganda chief who was killed in a drone strike in June. The Libyan authorities claim to have identified 50 people involved in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. So far four people have been arrested and are being questioned, officials have said.“We know of 50 people who were involved in the attack, we have names and we know who they are, but there could be more,” Abdel-Monem Al-Hurr, spokesman for Libya’s Supreme Security Committee, said.“Four have been arrested. Some of the others may have escaped via Benghazi airport, maybe to Egypt, but this not confirmed. We have given their names to all of the Libyan border entry points.”Mohammed al-Megaryef, the head of Libya’s national assembly, said the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi was planned and “meticulously executed.”Tuesday’s attack by armed men in the eastern city of Benghazi came amid a wave of protests in the Muslim world against a US made amateur Internet film deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammed.Suspected Islamic militants fired on the consulate with rocket-propelled grenades and set it ablaze on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on the United States by al-Qaida.Libya’s assembly chief said the attack on the US consulate was planned and “meticulously executed”.“I don’t want to talk about what happened in other countries but as for Libya, the operation was meticulously executed,” Mohammed al-Megaryef said of the wave of protests across the world over a US-produced film mocking Islam.“There was planning. It was not a peaceful protest which degenerated into an armed attack or aggression. That’s how it was planned.“The attack itself and the manner in which the attack occurred… confirms that this was planned and programmed to achieve a purpose,” Megaryef said. The attack “was prepared, especially since it coincided with the date of September 11”, he said, referring to the 2011 attacks on the United States claimed by al-Qaeda.“I do not exclude discovering things that will link al-Qaeda and the US consulate attack,” Megaryef said, adding however that it was “very early to talk about the investigation”.A senior US official said extremists appeared to have used the demonstration against the film as a “pretext” to attack American interests on the anniversary.Megaryef also said foreigners may have been involved in the attack.“There are non-Libyan actors present in Libya. They aim to carry out their own plans in our territory… [But] we will not allow that Libyan territory be used to implement these plans,” he said.Sudan yesterday rejected a U.S. request to send a platoon of Marines to bolster security at the U.S. embassy in Khartoum. On Friday, a U.S. official said Washington would send Marines to Sudan to improve security at the embassy after protesters entered the mission in a demonstration against the anti-Islam film.“Sudan is able to protect the diplomatic missions in Khartoum and the state is committed to protecting its guests in the diplomatic corps,” Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti told the official news agency, SUNA.Meanwhile, downtown Cairo, scene of the first protest over an anti-Islam film, appeared calm last night hours after security forces pushed protesters away from the U.S. Embassy toward Tahrir Square, where they were further dispersed. As the United States strengthened security at diplomatic stations amid the anger, demonstrators clashed with police outside the American Consulate in Sydney.Carrying signs that read: “Obama, Obama, we like Osama” and “Behead All Those Who Insult the Prophet,” hundreds of protesters gathered on the steps of the consulate. The demonstration turned violent after protesters were pushed back from the building.Authorities used tear gas and police dogs to disperse protesters who threw bottles and shoes — considered a grave insult among Muslims. Six police officers were injured and eight people were arrested, Sydney police said. Seventeen people were treated for the effects of pepper spray used by police. In his weekly address, U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged “images on our televisions are disturbing.”“But let us never forget that for every angry mob, there are millions who yearn for the freedom and dignity and hope that our flag represents,” Obama said.Obama reiterated that those who killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi will be brought to justice.FBI investigators probing the killings put off a visit until conditions in the volatile region are safer. Agents had hoped to arrive in Libya on Saturday, federal law enforcement officials said.Hundreds of Egyptian riot police remained in Tahrir Square as workers cleaned streets and businesses and assessed damage from five days of protests. From Morocco to Malaysia, thousands of Muslims have taken to the streets in recent days — with sometimes deadly results — over the release of a 14-minute trailer, privately produced in the United States. -

The President at a special reception in honour of the Paralympics athletes and officials as well as the Falconets, gave each of the gold medalists N5million and the silver medalists N3million each.
The bronze medalists went home with N2million each while the other members of the delegation were rewarded with N500000 each.

The Nigerian special athletes won a total of 13 medals- six gold, five silver and two bronze medals. On the overall medals table, Team Nigeria finished 22nd position in the world and third in Africa behind Tunisia and South Africa that placed first and second respectively.
officials got N1million.
The Falconets presented a jersey with the players autograph to the president.
Speaking at the occasion, Jonathan decried the abysmal performance of Nigerian athletes at the London Olympics, describing it as a huge disappointment.
He underscored the urgent need to revamp the sporting sector to restore it to its glorious days. To achieve this, the President said government will convene a national sport retreat to address critical issues in the sector.
He said key actors in the federal and state governments, the private sector, retired and active sports men and women will participate in the retreat.
Jonathan also called on state governments to take sport seriously and engage youths in various sporting competitions with a view to catching them young.
He commended the Paralympians and Falconets for their outstanding performances and assured that government will ensure that preparation for any global sporting event starts early.
He equally noted that attention will be paid to the provision of infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Governor Rotimi Ameachi of Rivers and Sport Minister, Bolaji Abdulahi disagreed over the possible cause of the failure of the country’s team at the 2012 Olympics.
While the minister blamed indiscipline and lack of determination on the part of the athletes, the governor said it was mainly as a result of inadequate preparation.
Bolaji had noted that the difference between the Olympians and the Paralympians was the issue of high level of commitment and discipline.
But the governor disagreed with him as he noted that determination and discipline without proper preparation will always lead to failure.
He asked that the country “should not be too hard on our athletes. No matter how determined our athletes are if we don’t prepare well we would not win any medal.”
He therefore called for early preparation for the next games slated for Brazil in 2016.
Speaking on the Paralympians, Ameachi said they had comforted Nigerians with their performance – something their able bodied colleagues could not do
He used the opportunity to call on the Federal Government to pay attention on the disturbing rise in polio incidents in the country.
He said rather than increase the numbers of those on wheel chairs as a result of polio, the president should call the attention of those concerned to urgently tackle the situation.

Ubani said since the depot was reopened, the economic activities around the area has picked up, pointing out that it will help to keep the youths of the state in check and reduce the constant pipeline vandalism being noticed before now.
The commissioner, who was reacting to a letter allegedly written to the state government by the PPMC over the alleged vandalism along the pipeline leading to the Osisioma depot, said the letter did not emanate from the owners of the depot.
He appointed fingers at some unscrupulous petroleum marketers who want to create problems that will make the PPMC to stop the supply of the Premium Motor Spirit [PMS]. “They want to create problems so that petrol dealers will come to their farm tanks to buy fuel,” he said.

Anambra kidnapping saga: Court grants bail to suspects
An Ogidi High Court, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, presided over by Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, yesterday granted bail to detained hotelier, Mr. Christopher Udoh, proprietor of three Arthur Garden hotels at Nkpor, which was sealed by Governor Peter Obi, over alleged kidnapping complicity. It would be recalled that an Otuocha High Court presided over by Justice J.I Nweze, had earlier granted the hotelier bail but it was not honoured by the police. In a fresh application for his bail earlier this week, the lead counsel to the defendant, Frank Molokwu, assisted by Mrs. M.C Ilondu, told the court that from the proof of evidence before the court as submitted by the police, the hotelier was not complicated in any kidnapping and that it was only the name of his hotel that was mentioned. Also joined as counsel to the defendant were Darlington Okeke and S.O Chukelu. On granting bail after hearing the submissions of the defendant’s counsels and that of the state prosecutor, the judge said he would not rely on the bail earlier granted the hotelier by the Otuocha High Court, adding that it has been overtaken by events.According to the judge, the mere fact that they caught robbers or kidnappers in his hotel did not mean that he has a link.He therefore granted him bail with the sum of N5million and three sureties in like sum. -

Court rejects plea to stop Jonathan’s impeachment
A Federal High Court, Abuja yesterday refused to stop the House of Representatives from initiating impeachment moves against President Goodluck Jonathan over poor budget implementation.Justice Gabriel Kolawole declined the ex parte application by the National Chairman of African Liberation Party (ALP), Dr. Emmanuel Osita Okere, who asked the court to stop the House.Emphasising the need for caution, the court said it must have been established that the impeachment proceedings had begun before it could hear the suit in order not to interfere with the functions of the House.By the proviso of Section 143 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, the court held that no single arm of the National Assembly can unilaterally impeach the President, adding that it requires a joint resolution of the House and the Senate before the President could be removed.By not joining the Senate as a party to the suit, the court said, the ex parte motion could not succeed.“This may not be the proper occasion for this court to grant ex parte order against the 2nd and 3rd defendants, as the reliefs sought by the plaintiff largely benefits the President,” the court said.Justice Kolawole accordingly refused the ex parte order and adjourned the matter indefinitely for the Chief Judge to re-assign the case.Moving the ex parte application, the Applicant’s counsel, Alex Williams, had prayed the court to grant an interim order restraining the House, saying it was capable of distracting the President from discharging his duties. The defendants are Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, the House of Representatives, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and President Goodluck Jonathan. In his affidavit in support of the originating summons, the plaintiff stated that the move to impeach the President is heating up the polity, describing it as a disguise to cause political turmoil. The plaintiff asked the court to determine whether*Upon proper reading and interpretation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, whether any provision of the Constitution made 100 per cent implementation of the federal budget of Nigeria for each fiscal year as appropriated by National Assembly mandatory.*Upon proper reading and interpretation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, whether the National Assembly are empowered to impeach the President from office for failure to implement the budget by 100 per cent for any given fiscal year?* Whether the constitution prescribed any time frame or date in each fiscal year within which to declare the budget as non-implemented?If the above questions are answered in his favour, he is seeking the following reliefs:*A declaration that the move by the National Assembly to impeach the President from office for non-implementation of 100 per cent of the 2012 budget is premature, abuse of legislative powers, malevolent, unconditional, null and void.*An order of perpetual injunction restraining the leadership of the National Assembly from impeaching the President for non-implementation of 100 per cent of the budget as appropriated*An order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from harassing or further harassing the President with threats of impeachment or commencing any process of impeachment of the President for non-implementation of 100 per cent of the budget.*An order prohibiting the President or the executive arm of government from hurriedly executing any part of the budget when/where the circumstances at hand does not permit prudent execution of such.
