NAPPS sets up COVID-19 taskforce in Imo schools

    By Chris Njoku, Owerri

National Association of Private Proprietors of Schools (NAPPS), Imo branch has established Covid-19 taskforce to complement the state government in a bid to check the spread of the virus in schools.

Disclosing this to the Nation in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the Chairman of the association, Joe Mbakwe, said that the introduction of the taskforce would complement the state government taskforce led by Prof. Maurice Iwu to check the spread of the virus in the state.

“This is a way to show the world that Imo State private schools are 90 per cent ready to check the spread of the virus in private schools in the state,” he added.

Mbakwe, who is the proprietor of Sure Foundation Modern Schools, Avutu, De Sam Mbakwe Campus, noted that the virus though deadly has come to stay with the people, adding that the best Federal Government could do now is to come out with taskforce that would ensure compliance of the preventive measures than to lock down the country the second time.

He said the last year lockdown had adverse effect on private schools in the country, adding that the education sector suffered a lot of backwardness.

“If we don’t run normal school calendar, it will be a disaster to the sector. We made a lot of sacrifices for the last lockdown last year to ensure that we compressed two sessions together. Any lock down again will collapse the school system.

“What we need now is to make sure everybody complies with the protocols. We must adhere and adjust to the preventive measures.

“If Nigeria is a developed country that has gone far with e-learning or online education in our educational system, we can also be thinking in that direction. But with my experience of over 20 years, no state including Imo is up to 10 per cent e-learning compliance. So the best is the normal conventional classroom learning,” he stated.

How Thugluvin records is harnessing raw talents

    Our Reporter

Despite there being many artistes in the country, most upcomers are often not appreciated as celebrities. This can be seen in the Nigerian music industry as just very few celebrity artistes carry the upcoming artists along.

Subsequently, there are many artistes in the music industry that have outstanding vocals, ravishing stage performances and great lyrics but have not been linked to a prestigious record label.

On this note, Thugluvin Records has proven to be a frontier of discovery, as this record label flagged off its functions fully in 2015, and has been the talk of most blogs, and people.

The record label began with the sole purpose of brainstorming ideas with talented songwriters and songsters that has in turn, created more success for the label.

Amongst the record label’s visions and missions, the most engaging idea is to create a roundtable where talented songwriters and artists can be endorsed, as well as a great platform to produce hit songs that will reward team members with accolades and opportunities to partner with more artists signed to the label.

FUNAAB to resume for academic activities, says VC

    By Ernest Nwokolo, Abeokuta

The Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB), Abuja, has assured that the institution is fully ready for resumption and academic activities earlier than January 18 stipulated by the National University Commission (NUC).

The University said further that it has elected to adopt hybrid method of teaching – physical and virtual classes, not only to ensure compliance with the COVID – 19 guidelines but also to make room for a speedy academic calendar that could clear the backlog of outstanding sessions, including the 2019/2020 session that is just commencing.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Felix Kolawole Salako, disclosed this while briefing the press on Tuesday, assuring that the University has enough internet-based facilities and physical structures to implement the hybrid method that entails virtual learning and physical teaching.

Prof. Salako said the nation’s public universities face a dicey situation, expressing the fear that while they contend with the challenges of having backlog of unfinished academic sessions due to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, it could worsen if the system is allowed to be hurt further by another threat of strike this time, from the Non – Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU).

He also expressed concern that the leadership of the FUNAAB branch of ASUU could tell the public that the institution was not yet ready for resumption given the realities of COVID 19, whereas adequate arrangements had been put in place to address all issues pertaining to COVID -19 protocols.

He said: “This University has enough internet-based facilities and physical structures to do a combination of virtual learning as well as physical teaching that would be hybrid in nature given the realities of COVID 19 and we are fully implementing all protocols spelt out by the NCDC.

“It is laughable when certain academic staff say FUNAAB cannot handle online classes whereas it is on record that the University did virtual learning for pupils of our primary school and even our secondary school while we even used our FUNAAB Radio to relay online lectures.

“I think it is about time that our academics woke up to the new reality. Even some state universities have already started online teaching. We have all it takes for our students to excel through the various platforms that we have set up.

“And, I believe our lecturers are fully ready. It is only a handful of them involved in discrediting the university. As far as I am concerned, there is no course that cannot be taught online.”

In attendance at the press briefing include the President, Students Union Government of the university, Comrade Michael Oloyede who led his executives to pass a vote of confidence on the Vice-Chancellor for massive rehabilitation of the campus in readiness for them, pledging that the students will be of good behaviour as a way of reciprocating the management’s gesture.

  • Betty Akeredolu: Life saving impacts of a courageous fighter

Betty Akeredolu: Life saving impacts of a courageous fighter

    Our Reporter

Potash can easily be distinguished amongst stones, just the same way that the first lady of Ondo State is clearly standing very tall amongst her fellow first ladies in Nigeria. Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu
is not only defined by her position as the first lady of Ondo State; she also a virtuous woman of many parts.

Mama FOWOSO, as Arabinrin is popularly known has done a whole lot in her capacity to impact the lives of women and girl child in some states. She has succeeded in changing the archaic and uninformed misconceptions about breast and cervical cancers through her BRECAN foundation platform.

The cancer battler and survivor have also created cancer awareness amongst her fellow first ladies through the First Ladies Against Cancer ( FLAC). Mrs Akeredolu has thus far put machinery in motion for a global strategy to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer amongst Nigerian women and ladies. She has undoubtedly made her mark in the fight against breast and cervical cancer in Nigeria.

Her Excellency is blessed with the rarely combined qualities of resilience and grit. She also undying faith in her enlightenment message of early detection and management of breast and cervical cancers. Also, Mrs Akeredolu has over the years developed a project in a strategic manner to address various challenges facing the family system within Ondo State. She has also deployed her time and resources for adequate empowerment of the girl child within and outside of Ondo State.

The BRECAN founder has done a whole lot thus far to inspire and motivate Nigerian women on the need to take their health seriously and to equally ensure early detection of the disease. The modus operandi of BRECAN is to encourage the government not to turn blind eye to the fight against cancer. The NGO also focuses on early diagnosis of the disease and also encourage the government to improve on its policies; so as to curtail the health toll of cancer on women.

Of a fact, Arabinrin Betty Akeredolu truly deserves credit for the awareness and reassuring information she has so far created on breast and cervical cancer. Her words of hope have always been that if she could survive breast cancer, then any other woman can as well survive. She has also been working tirelessly to expand the operational scope of BRECAN since it was formed in 1997. Thus far, the mother chapter of BRECAN in Oyo State has given birth to eight other chapters.

Instructively, Her Excellency has cautiously worked out independent funding plans for BRECAN so as to ensure its sustainability. The Non-Governmental Organization has since been deploying independent means of sourcing funds for its activities. Moreso, crowdfunding has been one of the most viable instruments of sourcing funds for BRECAN. It is also important to state that all the funds so far sourced have been prudently deployed for the treatment of women with breast cancer in the affected states.

Mama FOWOSO has over time taken her awareness creation to a level where lots of women are already known by now that cervical cancer is actually preventable and curable if detected early. She has also raised her awareness to a level of assuring women that the world truly has all it takes to make cancer preventable and curable. She has equally been championing the campaign of making the relevant information known to Nigerian women.

As expected, efforts of Arabinrin Akeredolu in BRECAN have not gone unnoticed in Nigeria and in the international sphere. She has thus far received lots of accolades for her breast cancer awareness campaign, which has saved many Nigerian women from untimely death.

In spite of her current level of success in the fight against cancer, Mrs Akeredolu still nurtures an audacious global target of 2030.

According to the targets, all countries are expected to have achieved 90% HPV vaccination coverage and 70% screening coverage as well as 90% access to treatment of cervical pre-cancer and cancer, including access to palliative care by the year 2030.

Impressively, Her Excellency has also taken it upon herself the responsibility of forming the Foundation of Wives of Ondo State Officials and Female Appointees (FOWOSO). Digital mummy, as Mrs Akeredolu is also known, had thoughtfully came up with the idea of FOWOSO to reach out to women in the state through different socio-economic empowerment programmes. She had floated the FOWOSO initiative on December 7, 2017.

The forum also serves as a platform for women empowerment in Ondo State with a focus on skill acquisition for women across the 18 Local Government Areas of the Sunshine State. It is on record that FOWOSO has been able to reach out to over 18,000 women in the Local Government Areas of Ondo State since its inception.

It is also important to note that FOWOSO, under the leadership of
Arabinrin Betty Akeredolu has been offering benefits that could make long-lasting impacts on members. The initiative is clearly beyond giving immediate financial gain but is primarily focused on skills and knowledge acquisition. FOWOSO has indeed provided a platform through which many women have learnt Bead Making, Fashion designing, Event Management, Shoemaking, tying of gele, Catering craft amongst other numerous skills acquisition programmes.

Another area through which the Ondo State first lady has also impacted lives is her BEMORE Foundation. She mooted the project’s idea to bridge the technological advancement gap between the girls and their male counterpart in Nigeria.

BEMORE is also an advocacy platform by Mrs Betty Akeredolu that is being effectively deployed to ensure the liberation and emancipation of the girl child. The platform has underscored the importance and relevance of girl child in the society. This avenue has also been used by Her Excellency to make the girl chill realize that they are not in any less human compared to their male counterparts.

The BEMORE initiative has so far trained and fully equipped more than 1000 girls in different skills acquisition ventures. The two weeks Annual Summer Boot Camp of Arabinrin Akeredolu has provided the right incentives for the girl child to excel in whatever venture since the projected came to light in 2017. The programme has thus far drawn participants mainly from Ondo, Ekiti and Imo States since it was launched.

The age bracket of BEMORE participants is 10-15 and they have in the last few years been exposed to different comprehensive trainings in Renewable energy, Solar panel development, Solar PV installation. The participants had also been taught Bead making, Liquid soap making, Drawing and Painting, Baking and Pastries, and tying of gele among many other skills.

It is worthy of note that BEMORE project has garnered lots of appreciative testimonies from the parents and guardians of participants. Many of them had attested to the fact that the skills
and knowledge acquired by their children and wards evidently came very handily, especially during the national lockdown of 2020 which was informed by the coronavirus pandemic.

It is also particularly commendable that Mrs Akeredolu has in more than two decades turned herself to leading campaigner for cancer prevention. Also, she is arguably the biggest fundraiser for breast cancer research. However, she is not shying away from the fact that many women still suffer from and dying of breast cancer due to ignorance. She is nonetheless disturbed that some women still attach spiritual meanings to cancer when they ought to focus on diagnosis and mastectomy. Unfortunately, the spiritual attachment to cancer also makes the cases of women to have deteriorated by the time they eventually agree to visit the hospital.

Above all, Arabinrin Betty Akeredolu has undoubtedly made her mark in the ceaseless campaign against breast and cervical cancers. She has also vowed to keep ensuring that no woman would die of breast cancer out of ignorance again.

Richthug Omobaale brings diversity to music game

    Our Reporter

As time goes on, it becomes imperative to normalize the various genres of music as its diversity leaves an exciting feel. Music has a long history of dignified personalities who would rather express their thoughts and emotions through music rather than riding on the most expensive trip.

Ultimately, this takes us to our reporter’s fascinating encounter with John Akim Orubor, also known as Richthug Omobaale, a Nigerian artist.

To begin with, John Akim is the leader of Thugluvin Records, a one-of-a-kind record label. This record label officially launched its operations in 2015, and it has since become the topic of most blogs and people.

If we go back in time, John Akim has always been open about his ambitions when he first launched the label. “Music is a part of me that can never degrade; rather, it finds its way back,” he says. Most of the time, it’s via people,” he says.

Likewise, the record label was founded with the sole objective of exploring options with outstanding composers and artists, which has resulted in the label’s increased success.

As a result, his crew has contributed massively to the label’s repertoire and are thus acclaimed.

Conversely, the most interesting idea among the record label’s ambitions and missions is to develop a panel discussion where brilliant composers and performers can be supported, as well as a solid platform for producing hit songs that will recompense the entire team with plaudits and possibilities to collaborate with additional artists signed to the label.

Furthermore, the record label has recorded popular songs by a variety of musicians, including Damyque’s Funwoje which featured Richthug, “Heavy Duty” by Damyque, “Body Calling” by Richthug, “Yoo” by Dammyque which featured Zlatan and Young John etcetera.
