  • PDP’s Amori wins Delta Central Senate seat

The People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate for the Delta Central Senatorial District election, Chief Ighoyota Amori, has been declared winner of last Saturday’s supplementary election in Delta state.

Amori led the results table with 116, 723 votes, ahead of Labour Party’s (LP) Ovie Omo-Agege, who polled an aggregate of 76, 635 votes while the All Progressives’ Party (APC) Hon Halims Agoda had 15, 491 votes.

According to the result breakdown, in Ethiope East, Ethiope West and Sapele local council areas, Amori got; 14, 142, 172 and 8, 864 votes while Omo-Agege got; 7, 168, 12 and 1, 541 votes respectively.

    For Udu, Uvwie, Okpe and Ughelli South areas, the PDP candidate pulled; 9, 194, 4, 819, 8, 613 and 2, 981 while the LP candidate got; 3, 956, 2, 366, 2, 022 and 681 respectively.

Reacting to the result, the Media Director, Omo-Agege Campaign Organisation, Martins Aruviere, expressed dissatisfaction that results in the strongholds of his principal were cancelled, hinting of his camp’s decision to explore the election tribunal to redress the situation.

“INEC is not independent as they want us to believe. Results from LP strongholds were unanimously cancelled, especially in Ethiope East, Uvwie and Udu Local Government Areas. This is just the beginning, election is just the first phase, the tribunal is there to scrutinize and question the process”, he said.

  • Voting ends as counting starts in Imo

Voting has closed in most places in the Imo governorship re-run election while counting is ongoing, correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report.

At Ossemotor in Oguta local government, voting ended around 3.40 p.m. while counting commenced immediately while it ended in most other places around 5 p.m.

The election has been characterised by violence and other electoral malpractice, especially in Oru East local government.

The election is holding in some polling units in 23 local government areas which were cancelled or inconclusive in the April 11 election.

Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr Marshall Anyanwu, complained that there were too many unaccredited observers at the election, especially in Omuma, Oru East local government.

Anyanwu, a former chairman of APC in the state, told newsmen at the Omuma Central School that state government officials, posing as observers, were all over the place in contravention of the electoral law.

  • Poor voters’ turnout in Delta

The supplementary elections scheduled for the Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta state were held on Saturday, largely characterised by low voters’ turnout, despite prompt dispatch of electoral officials and materials.

In Unit 9, 10 of Ward 9 and Unit 8, Ward 10 all in Ekpan community, the atmosphere was very calm.

In Effurun Ward 1, Unit 10, the same was the case.

Electoral officers complained of poor voters’ turnout, but added that there was no violence, as electorates who came out conducted themselves in orderly manners.

“We arrived here before 8:00am. The turnout is low but people are still coming for accreditation. The exercise is fair,” an Electoral Officer in Ekpan Ward 10, Unit 8, stated.

Agents of the three major political parties in the state, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP) who spoke to journalists assured that the exercise was going smoothly and materials were intact.

Speaking with journalists at his country home in Jesse, Ethiope West council area, Hon. Halims Agoda, the APC senatorial candidate, said he was optimistic that he will come out victorious in the election.

“Every human being is incurably optimistic. Why shouldn’t I be when I know that out of the three of us, I am the most credible candidate to represent Delta central,” he stated.

“I spent 12 productive years of my life in the House of Representatives. I will continue to render services to my people. Whatever you hear is a masquerade of the PDP.

“There are currently 17 federal positions for Delta State. They won’t come through Okowa, those will come through APC.  Very soon, the PDP hierarchy will be looking towards APC.

“The inducement pattern is the carrot they are deploying to confuse innocent electorates”, he said.

He called for more research work and proper handling of the card reader system which he described as “not perfectly in order,” noting that even with its use, outrageous figures were collated for the recently concluded elections.

  • Irregularities mar Imo rerun election

    Irregularities mar Imo rerun election

Saturday’s supplementary election in Imo State was marred by serious irregularities and low turnout of voters.

At Oru East Local Government Area, where majority of the polling units are located, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were arrested while thumb printing ballot papers in favour of one of the political parties.

Also arrested were fake INEC officials who posed as Returning Officers at the Collation Centre.

The Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mike Igini, who was among the INEC team deployed for the election, said the INEC officials were arrested at Umumma primary school Ward 10 Polling Unit 008, Polling Unit 003 and three others.

“Myself accompanied by the Assistant Inspector General of Police and Commissioner Police have arrested poll officials in Oru East. They were involved in mass thumb printing and have now been taken to owerri.

“Upon my suspicion, an imposter who claimed to be lNEC staff without proof, acting as a presiding officer, was arrested with my order.”

  • Massive voters’ turnout in Taraba

    Massive voters’ turnout in Taraba

There was an impressive voters’ turnout for Saturday’s supplementary governorship election across the 10 local government areas of Taraba State.

It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission cancelled the April 11 poll results in the local governments because of widespread irregularities.

Accreditation started on Saturday with most voters eager to exercise their civic responsibility.

There was also a heavy presence of security agents in all the affected local governments.

  • Low turnout mars Imo rerun election

There is low turnout of voters at the Imo State governorship rerun election.

Voters stayed away over fear of violence. But the atmosphere at the polling units is relatively peaceful except for the heavy presence of security operatives.
