  • Is Jude Orhorha a dog eater?

Is Jude Orhorha a dog eater?

If eating a dog makes you sound so perfectively like a dog, then actor Jude Orhorha could be said to be a fan of the ‘404’ delicacy. But we hear he is not. Then, how come he barks, whines, whimpers, howls, huffs, growls, yelps and yips, among other nuanced sounds of the dog family? An actor indeed!

When U.K-based artiste, Miller Luwoye, returned to the country to shoot SADE, a family centered animation movie, perhaps not much attention was given to the choice of the casting director until he got to the studio and he thought a real dog was brought in for vocalization.

“Who just made that sound?” Miller inquired suspiciously. All eyes turned to Jude. “Could you do that again?” he asked. Then the actor grumps. It was pure and unassuming of him. The entire studio was engulfed with laughter.

Thus, when the director was relaying his experience at the press conference of SADE penultimate Thursday, it was clear he had not recovered from the shock. He (Miller) revealed he had tasted the dog meat back in the day, but cannot remember what volume of it is capable of making someone sound like a dog. “Do you eat dog?” he had asked the actor. “He is a dog!” his colleagues teased, roaring with laughter.

The story and concept of SADE animated film appears to be something that will make news in Nigeria when it is finally released in the cinema. The fact that the cast members are excited about the production makes one to wonder.

Produced by the prolific author and speaker O.B.A Owolabi, SADE, which is scheduled to hit the cinema in 2018, is voiced by other notable thespians like Bimbo Manuel, Norbert Young, Omowunmi Dada, Gabriel Afolayan, Biodun Aleja, Yemi Shodimu, Judith Audu, Kate Adepegba, Deji Adenuga, and Ngozi Nwosu.

  • Black Panther: Where is the 3rd Force of Nollywood

Black Panther: Where is the 3rd Force of Nollywood

This is not about former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s politically motivated ‘Coalition for Nigeria Movement’, known also as the Third Force. It is not also the South Africa’s Third Force, a term used by leaders of the ANC during the late 1980s and early 1990s to refer to a clandestine force believed to be responsible for a surge in violence in KwaZulu-Natal, and townships around and south of the Witwatersrand. It is about a revolution on the Nigerian film industry that will not only tell the original African story, but deploys the Hollywood-like whiz kid to rake in the kind of money that ‘Black Panther’ is making at the moment.

Incidentally, there is a section of Nollywood muting the idea of a Third Force, each time they talked about the exploit of South Africa, as it concerns arty films, award-winning films, technical ingenuity, culture of film funds, and film collaboration with the West.

Outside the usual lip service paid the potential of film business in Nigeria, how can we use the Hollywood model to tell our own stories, as it appears Hollywood is bereft of original stories, and like petrol, they have come for our crude and made even more money selling the finished product to the world.

Let us first look at the area of historical distortion that most Africa-centered Hollywood films are known for. In a piece by Malena Amusa on February 21, 2018, the writer said: “As a visionary and creative professional, “Black Panther” truly inspired me. But as a historian and benefactor of the black struggle for liberation, the movie left me shocked and hurt.”

Her argument was that the movie’s neocolonial politics killed the true spirit of the Black Panther, and anyone hoping for a refreshing and futuristic road map to black liberation.

She said: “Rather than giving us hope, “Black Panther” engaged in perverse colonial fantasy, telling America it can come in Africa and take whatever it wants with no measures of accountability. The movie outright slights the main argument of its original comic, which challenged the West, not acquiesced to its agenda.”

This is what we get when we leave our potential untapped. Hollywood sure knows the power of black films. Records have been created with the likes of ‘Moonlight’, an almost entire black cast movie which won Best Picture at the Oscar last year. There is also ‘Hidden Figures’ which made $165.5 million in the US and an additional $48.8 million overseas in 2016, just as ‘Straight Outta Compton’ wowed with about $200 million for a film directed by a black filmmaker.

Now, ‘Black Panther’ didn’t just outdo box office records with $218m on debut weekend, it has also finally revealed how well, movies telling stories about black people, with black actors travel.

My concern here is how Nigerians can tell a similar story that will make N135 million in the first three days in Nigeria alone.

Going by the current structure in Nollywood whereby Bank of Industry gives loan to filmmakers, I do not see $200 million being the production cost of ‘Black Panther’ too much for BoI to doll out, should the DFI be sure of a film project returning N135 million in three days. As a matter of fact, in seven days, being last Thursday, the movie had hit the N200 million mark. And I heard it made more money in Ghana in the opening weekend than it made in Nigeria.

At the risk of saying that the cast of a movie is a better determinant the production house, with $200 million, not only is a Nollywood film sure of the best African actors in Hollywood, our local stars stand the chance of being integrated into the Hollywood space through this subtle approach. If a foreign DoP, all the effects and grading are what will take us to Hollywood to get a perfect finish product, so be it. For all I know, we would have started a new journey that sooner or later, will make us own our product 100 percent. When that happens, selling a full Africa film project in Hollywood may not be a problem, as we would have been integrated into the market.

  • As Desmond Elliot, other celebrities file out against cancer…

As Desmond Elliot, other celebrities file out against cancer…

In a bid to create awareness for cancer in the country, Nollywood filmmaker and Lagos State lawmaker, Hon. Desmond Elliot will on February 24, 2018 lead a 5km awareness walk in Surulere, Lagos.

The 5km walk which is organised by Atinuke Cancer Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation founded by cancer survivor, Atinuke Lawal, is scheduled to hold between 8:30am and 10:30am. However, before the start of the walk, there would be free health check for about 500 people and low tempo aerobics. After the walk, there will be a 40-minute novelty football match between female and male celebrities.

“I lost my aunt to breast cancer,” said Elliot whose birthday falls on February 4, being World Cancer Day.

He explained: “I discovered that she had detected it on time but she didn’t manage it. A lot of these people need love. Once you detect early, you have every chance that you can fight against it. And I said, to honour my aunt, it’s my mum’s birthday and to honour her, we decided to do this walk. So, it’s just grouping everything together into one. So, everything just seemed like we needed to get this going and there is no point being a ‘celebrity’ or a member of the parliament if you’re not able to lend your voice towards such causes. This is calling on well-meaning Nigerians to come join the walk on that day.”

Atinuke Lawal started the cancer awareness in December 2016 ‘as a result of my exposure to knowledge of lack of medical facilities for the treatment of cancer, the state of cancer treatment/patients and stigmatization of cancer patients in Nigeria’ after she was treated for cancer in Nigeria.

“As a survivor myself, my team and I are proud to provide excellent and compassionate assistance to patients,” she said.

“Our foundation conducts such event annually to support, raise awareness, educate, inform, advocate, motivate or inspire not only the patients but families of patients and the general public. We understand that cancer is a bully and no respecter of no-one, hence our slogan and group name ‘LET’S KILL IT!’ Cancer must be eradicated.

“Because we realise that Nigerians hate to discuss or hear about cancer, we decided to bring the message as subtle as possible by introducing entertainment while actually passing the awareness message through football and Nollywood which Nigerians love.”

She is however happy that her message is getting to the appropriate quarters.

“The cancer institute bill recently passed by the governor of Lagos state is evident that our effort is not in vain. Our message is getting to the right channel. We will not stop until cancer is totally eradicated in our midst. Together we can, “Let’s kill it!”

Last year at the foundation’s end of year party, tagged ‘Let’s Kill it’ at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi Araba, few cancer patients were sponsored financially to support treatment and drugs while about 50 other cancer patients got gifts of fruit hampers and food stuffs.

  • Blessing Egbe’s bold move

    Blessing Egbe’s bold move

Nollywood filmmaker, Blessing Egbe, is known for making out-of-the-box movies and it seems this is a reflection of every aspect of her essence.

At a time when filmmakers are wary of the activities of pirates, Egbe made a bold move when she put her 2017 movie, ‘The Women’, on DVD, prompting her peers to besiege her for her trade secret.

And if information flying around is anything to go by, the filmmaker is reaping the rewards of her bold move.

According to a source, Blessing was able to sell just about 20,000 copies of ‘The Women’ in the first week of release before the pirates swooped on the DVD. She however got the police to arrest some pirates who will soon be charged to court on her efforts.

The source revealed that despite the seeming setback, she made a wholesale turnover on the DVDs alone to the tune of eight million naira.

“Maybe her profit there might be four or five million, but according to her ‘that’s money that would have been lying fallow as additional revenue because we all are afraid of releasing on DVDs. That market still has residual income for producers and cannot be completely ignored,” the source said.

‘The Women’ stars the likes of Kate Henshaw, Omoni Oboli, Femi Branch, Omoni Oboli, Ufuoma Mcdermott, Kalu Ikeagwu, and others.

When a group of women and their partners decide to go on a weekend getaway, they are met with challenging trials that each must confront or succumb to.

Egbe is also responsible for the movies, ‘Two Brides and a Baby’ as well as ‘One Room’.

  • I felt like a boarding house school girl in CHM –Eniola Badmus

I felt like a boarding house school girl in CHM –Eniola Badmus

After being holed up for 30 days in the maiden edition of Celebrity Housemates reality show, the winner, Eniola Badmus, has said the show was drilling but she deserved to win.

“I think I played my game very well,” said Badmus, a Nollywood actor and producer, who competed in the show told The Nation.

“It’s a game. I gave enough entertainment in the house. There were some intellectual questions I was also able to answer. I deserved to win.”

She competed against Ruggedman, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Emmanuel Ikubuese, Peggy Ovire, Bolanle Ninalowo, Funky Mallam, Muma Gee, Fredrick Leonard, Ada Ameh, Ogenna Ekwubiri and Doris Simeon in the show that lasted from January 12 to February 11, 2018.

On winning the show which comes with a star prize of N7million, Badmus said: “It felt great. It’s quite awesome. It wasn’t easy I must say. The show was quite drilling.”

Stressing on how ‘drilling’ participating in the show was, she said, “It was like really really hard.”

“That’s a typical example of saying ‘I worked for my money.’ At some point I almost felt I was going out. If I knew it was going to be as drilling as that, I’m not sure I wouldn’t come. For the first time in my life after a long time, I felt like a boarding house secondary school girl. We didn’t have our own time, it’s their call. We don’t sleep on time. We sleep by 5:am, we wake up maybe like 11am or 12 noon again to start our tasks. It was not easy.”

Badmus who disclosed that she particularly loved the activities on the cultural day also said she nearly quit the show midway.

“By that time, I think I have spent two weeks and I actually cried. I must say the truth because I wasn’t used to that life anymore. I’m a CEO on my own. I do my thing at my own time. I go to my movie set when it’s being scheduled and if it’s alright for me. But now, it’s not like that. They’ll wake you up. You’ll go back to sleep late. You’re being asked to do things you’re not even interested to do. So, it wasn’t like my own call. It was their call. You have to just do what you have to do.”

She however expressed satisfaction at the show’s organisation.

“They did their best. I mean, it’s a maiden edition. And they tried. That was even more than ‘tried.’ I’m sure the next one will be better.”

  • BBNAIJA EVICTION: Why CeBi is ‘endangered species’

BBNAIJA EVICTION: Why CeBi is ‘endangered species’

Unless something happens like the seeming ‘magic’  that brought Donald Trump to power, the once-revered Tobi Bakre, Cee-C’s strategic partner-turned lover in the ongoing Big Brother Naija reality show might be among the ‘unlucky’ ones to be thrown out of the show tomorrow.

Tobi and Cee-C, otherwise called CeBi were nominated for possible eviction by five out of the nine other pairs, making their nomination the second highest to that of Miracle, the pilote and his partner Nina otherwise called MiNa who were put up by seven pairs this week.

This was followed by Lolu and Anto (LoTo) with four nominations; Vandora and Dee-One with two nominations; Banbam and Teddy A (BamTeddy) and Angel and Ifue Ennada (AngelIfu) with one monination each, while Rico and Ahneeka (RiNeeka) and Princess and Bitto (PriTo) got no nominations by the other housemates.

With the votes having been nullified by Biggie as punishment to the housemates – all the housemates – excluding Khloe and her partner K.Brule (KSquare) who are enjoying the Head of House immunity as well as Leo and Alex (LeoLex) who were saved by Khloe’s veto – are up for eviction tomorrow.

However, one is able to speculate the outcome of the eviction exercise from how the housemates voted their colleagues in the annulled result that would have put MiNa, CeBi and LoTo in the survival-of-the-fittest race.

Had this been the situation, fans of the show would have less headache in choosing among these three pairs who have somewhat exchanged their strategic partnerships for romance, and perhaps, the most ‘guilty’, which appears to the CeBi, has a high tendency to be evicted.

Reading through displayed comments by fans on the show on the BBNaija channel on DStv and GOtv, one would wonder how Tobi who started so well in the competition has become a subject of ridicule. His ‘offence’ is how much romantic attention he is giving to Cee-C to the detriment of his interaction with other housemates and the kind of entertainment the fans hope to get from unrestrained camaraderie. But Cee-C has joined him in her reclusiveness, and he must explain and plead with her each time he strayed outside her hold.

Interestingly, the social media has been agog with memes of Tobi, depicting him as a weakling, just as one of the housemates described him as the Biblical Samson and Cee-C the Delilah.

This season, the housemates are playing in pairs, thus If a housemate gets a reward or punishment, the partner is also at the receiving end. Therefore, eviction of a minimum of two according to show host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu translates to four housemates leaving the show on Sunday.

If there is another pair that is likely going to be saved by voters, I would most likely be Lolu and Anto who, although have shared a few kisses, do not look distracted from the game. Lolu has been described as intelligent and smart, while Anto has been to be daring and entertaining. The same cannot be said of Miracle and his partner Nina who are known mainly to have been sharing kisses, hugs and parading their good looks.

From the other list, Teddy A comes across as a silent achiever who is gradually warming himself into the heart of fans, while Bambam’s amiable personality and brains have been eulogized by many.

Vandora and Dee-One have not earned pronounced ‘irritation’ within and outside the house, even though Dee-One has not been as comical as he promised; Angel thrills with voice and guitar while Ifu has not had altercations with other housemates. Although Ahneeka has had it rough with Teddy A, she is good with most housemates while her partner, Rico will pass unnoticed save for his light complexion. On the other hand, Princess and Bitto (PriTo) got no nominations by the other housemates, perhaps because many didn’t see them as threats just yet, even though some are wary of Bitto.

  • BABA FRYO Why I can’t forget my mum

BABA FRYO Why I can’t forget my mum

Reggae artiste Baba Fryo is still in a state of sadness following the death of his mother which occurred last year.

According to Baba Fryo whose real name is Friday Igwe, his mother, Alice Godwin Igwe, died in Ajegunle, Lagos on December 17, 2017 at 87 years.

Speaking with The Nation ahead of preparations for the funeral ceremony, the artiste said the wake will hold on February 17 in Ajegunle, while the internment holds on February 24 in Agbor, Delta State.

However, the loss of his mother is still taking its toll on the ‘Denge Pose’ crooner.

“I miss everything ooo,” he said, referring to the death of his mother. She’s funny. When I mean funny, she has a sense of humour. She is caring. And she encouraged me in my music career. I can’t forget her.”

    His mother had six children.

Baba Fryo was among artistes like Father U-Turn, Daddy Showkey and Daddy Fresh that put Ajegunle on the music map of Nigeria in the 1990s.
