  • Darkness over Hollywood

A seeming abuse of the gravity of sexual allegations notwithstanding, multiple accusations of sexual assault against male producers have cast a gloom on Hollywood, and this will, for a while, put a strain on whatever indulgent relationships that had existed among cast and crew members of the leading film industry in the world.

There is no doubt that some of the claims might be true, however, there appears to be a semblance of misconstrued intention in the casual familiarity among these creative colleagues.

Therefore, when you think of the sort of silent resentment or bipolar disorder in some people, you will learn to keep your jokes, hugs, playful spanks, and body gestures to the confines of your home.

Michael Douglas, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, and former president George Bush are among about 120 men in Hollywood who have been accused of one form of sexual assault or another, all claims coming after allegations of sexual harassment and rape against film producer Harvey Weinstein by Rose McGowan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd and dozens of others.

Although the trend has become alarming in the past one month, we can recall snippets of such events in recent times, especially going through series of litigation that brought American entertainer Bill Cosby to his knees for the better part of 2015-2016.

Until the Rose McGowan claims that indicted Harvey Weinstein, Cosby was a huge subject of sexual assault allegations, ranging from rape, drug facilitated sexual assault, sexual battery, and child sexual abuse, to sexual misconduct, with the earliest incidents taking place in 1960.

As a result of these allegations, many organisations have severed ties with the comedian, while previously awarded honors and titles have been revoked. Reruns of ‘The Cosby Show’ and other shows featuring Cosby have also been pulled from syndication by many organisations. Also, 25 colleges and universities have rescinded his honorary degrees.

To further underscore how allegations of sexual delinquency have taken a toll on the careers of people, Kevin Spacey got fired from Ridley Scott’s new movie, a month before its release. Spacey who earlier starred as J. Paul Getty in the film was replaced with Christopher Plummer.

Producer Ridley Scott had to cut out Spacey from the already produced movie despite the risk of missing its December 22 release date, and jeopardising its Oscar eligibility.

Crux of the matter was a wave of sexual assault allegations made against Spacey by more than a dozen people, including multiple accusations of assault on underage victims.

Pundits say although, there have been other instances of recasting a role or conducting extensive reshoots after a film has wrapped, it is very rare and would usually only happens in the case of unexpected death — a case in study was Paul Walker’s brothers standing in for reshoots of ‘Fast &Furious 7’ after the death of the original cast.

Let’s take a look at Michael Douglas who was accused of masturbating in front of a former employee some 32 years ago.

Douglas who said the allegations were a “complete lie”, has had the support of his wife, but that has not taken away the trauma.

Here’s what the actor, who said he has been “so supportive of the women’s movement”, has to say: “The part that hurt the worst is having to share something like this to your wife and your children. My kids are really upset… they have to go to school worrying this is going to be in some article about me, being a sexual harasser. They’re scared and very uncomfortable.”

  • Shina Peller eyes politics

    Shina Peller eyes politics

Shina Peller, owner of the famous Quilox Night Club, and son of the late magician, Professor Peller who is aspiring for a political office in the 2019 elections, has given reason for his new ambition.

Peller cited ‘level of decadence in the country’ as one of the reasons he is now giving politics a chance.

He said on his Instagram page: “As we all know, election season in Nigeria is fast approaching and political gladiators are already building their war chests but the average young Nigerian is bothered less. It’s almost like a feeling of powerlessness and despair, most believe the processes have already been predetermined by the powers that be so why bother wasting time to get a voters card talk less of actually voting. The common notion is that the candidate with the largest war chest wins and we have heard many tales of people selling their votes for less than a dollar and a bag of chips.

“One thing is certain, though nobody is happy with the state of Nigeria today, most people who know me can vouch for the fact that I have never been interested in politics and I have never had an eye for it, but with the level of decadence in the country today I have been forced to change my mind.”

The Lagos socialite believes the time is now to take responsibility and create the change that the citizens seek.

Continuing, he said: “While I cannot say for certain if I will yield to the tremendous pressure on me to run for elective office from my constituency, one thing I can say for certain is I will be actively involved in the political process going forward, I will no longer sit back and watch things go bad. I enjoin all young people to do the same, please register to vote, join a political party, run for office, be the change you seek, it’s time to stop ranting on social media and take positive actions. The young people in Nigeria are the most powerful single block in the country today however the old guard tries to divide us along ethnic, religious and cultural lines, but once we unite nobody can stop us. Let’s start changing Nigeria together today.”

Williams Uchemba gets kudos on #givechallenge

Thinking he might have gotten tired with the financial constraint on running a course to keep people off the street since his return late last year, Nollywood actor Williams Uchemba, is still on the journey of putting smiles on the faces of the less priviledge.

The actor, who has continued to share his progress on feeding the less priviledge and sending youths back to school as a result of financial handicap, on Wednesday 17, 2018 posted a picture showing him in a bank making withdrawal to send some kids that have been out of school back to school because of school fees.

Captioning the picture, he wrote. “Why should I spend 2m on drinks with friends in two hours when that money can set 3 people up for life and even send some kids to school…why should I spend 1.5m on a Gucci product or buy a Fendi shoe of 800k (I will wear once or twice and want another one) when I can use it to get people without hope off the street.

“Until we start to think less of ourselves and think more of people we can’t have a fulfilled life and a life of purpose. I remember when all I wanted was a car many years ago after few months of driving that car I got bored and wanted a new one, that’s what happens when you base life on material things.

Being termed as show off with posting pictures, he stated. “Always learn to get what you need in life not the things you want because most of the things we want we don’t need. Today I’m sending some kids that have been out of school back to school because of school fees and I challenge you to do same today. Honor God with your income (tithes and offerings, and kingdom investment) honor the servant of God in your life (honor and sow seed) and bless the poor (because you are blessed to bless others) invest in people more than material things and leave the rest for God. Finally, if showing videos and pictures like this that inspires and challenges people to give around the world is called show off then I want to show off for the rest of my life #givechallenge”.

Presently shuttles between Nigeria and the United States of America, the African Youth representative to the UN, who won ‘Best Kid Actor’ in Nigeria award in 2002, for his role in the movie titled ‘Oh My Son’, said he started the challenge tagged #givechallenge for everyone to help those on the street as most can not make ends meet.

For this act, the young actor has continued to receive positive comments from his colleagues and fans, urging him to continue with the good work.

  • Ayade decries youth migration, as crowd storm Carnival Calabar

Ayade decries youth migration, as crowd storm Carnival Calabar

In what was total shutdown of the city of Calabar last December, over a million revelers thronged the 12kms route, to watch an endless stretch of carnival bands as they interpret this year’s theme of Migration through drama and dance.

Apart from the crowd that greeted the biggest street party in Africa, there was also an addition of four non-competing bands, bringing the total number of bands to nine, with five in the competitive category.

The 2017 carnival also played host to a 1500-man contingent from Imo State who were on ground to understudy the annual event.

Flagging off the event at the Millennium Park Calabar, Cross River governor, Prof Ben Ayade, wondered why young men and women had to leave the shores of Nigeria, stressing the blessing and richness that exist in Africa.

The governor, who, shortly after the flag-off ceremony, led the bands through the carnival routes amidst cheers by all, said: “Sometimes we begin to wonder why young Africans go through the Mediterranean sea, Sahara desert through Morocco and other difficult routes finding themselves in Libya, used as slaves and reduced as sub-humans.”

He enjoined young men and women to “put an end to migration, and should rather come to Calabar as we have provisions for jobs and have created opportunities as politicians and people in government, for you to have good jobs so that you can stay back here.”

To Africa leaders at all levels, Ayade maintained that “we have a responsibility to reverse the trend associated with migration for that is what the theme this year is telling us. As we watch the bands dance and tell their story in a dramatic form, we want to see the interpretation which is the ultimate aim.”

Continuing, the governor intimated that “this year’s carnival is not just about dancing and celebrating, but telling a very painful and sorrowful story as it relates to migration,” adding that “in due time Africa will rule the world.”

Advocating the return of migrant Africans to their respective countries instead of taking risks through perilous roads in the quest for greener pastures, Ayade said, “governments of Africa will continue to make efforts at ensuring that they return, we shall, we will and will do so.”
