World Cup 2018

  • Mexico stun champions Germany 1-0

Defending champions Germany crashed to defeat in their first game at the World Cup on Sunday as an enterprising Mexico refused to be intimidated and came away 1-0 winners.

A shaky warm-up campaign had called into question the dominant form the Germans showed in qualifying, but experience and records were on their side.

This iks because they have won every opening game at major tournaments since Joachim Low took over as coach in 2006.

But Juan Osorio’s Mexican side had other ideas, however, holding their own against the favourites’ fearsome but slowing midfield and finding space at the back.

They needed this, because they were seeking to end 33 years without a win against Germany.

After wasting a handful of first-half chances while living dangerously in their own half in the thrill-packed Group F opener, Hirving Lozano’s 35th-minute strike on the break proved just reward.

When German centre back Mats Hummels lost possession deep in the Mexican half, Javier Hernandez was released through the middle to outpace Jerome Boateng.

With a less than perfect pass he found Lozano, who controlled the ball, cut inside Mesut Ozil, held off a charging Toni Kroos and slotted coolly past Manuel Neuer.

At the other end, Guillermo Ochoa tipped a blistering Kroos free kick on to the bar minutes later, in what was to prove the Germans’ closest effort of the match.

The match in Moscow was one in which the Germans had more than 60 percent possession, but they could not make it count.

Germany pressed in the second half but struggled to find the target, as Osorio beefed up his defences to hang on.

He removed Lozano with 15 minutes left and sent on 39-year-old Rafael Marquez at the back to become the third man ever to play in five World Cups.

Low threw on Marco Reus in place of Sami Khedira and, with 10 minutes to go, switched left-back Marvin Plattenhardt for a second striker, Mario Gomez, to reinforce Timo Werner.

Werner had failed to make much of a mark in the German spearhead.

Mexico had much of the 80,000 crowd in Luzhniki Stadium on its feet as the Germans left ever greater gaps at the back.

The wastefulness notably of Hernandez on the final pass may reassure future opponents that Mexico, while determined to end a Cinderella reputation, have not replaced Germany as favourites.

Youngster Julian Brandt nearly saved Low’s night after taking over from Werner in the final minutes when he blasted a shot past Ochoa’s right post.

Goalkeeper Neuer even came up for a corner kick in injury time.

But it was not to be.

Mexico can dream of going better than a consistent record of reaching the last 16 of the last six World Cups.

They can even think perhaps of improving on the quarter-final they last reached in 1986.

“They are the best team in the world,” goalscorer Lozano said, describing his strike as “the best goal of my life”.

The Germans now face Sweden and South Korea and should still qualify from Group F.

But their reputation is not what it was.

“We are now under pressure. We have to get six points from the next games,” Kroos said. “We did not do well. We had our chances but didn’t score.”(Reuters/NAN)

  • World Cup: Don’t give up on Super Eagles, Ekweremadu urges Nigerians

Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has urged Nigerians not to give up on Super Eagles after their Saturday loss to Croatia in ongoing World Cup competition in Russia.

Ekweremadu made the call in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Uche Anichukwu, on Sunday in Abuja.

The Eagles went down 0-2 in their first match in Group D, which also has Argentina and Iceland.

The deputy president of the senate expressed optimism that the team would get better as the tournament progressed.

“No doubt the team made costly mistakes and Nigeria is in a tight corner after the loss to Croatia.

“However, I am sure that the players and coaching crew have picked some lessons.

“The technical crew might have to rethink the team’s formation.

“Maybe, also, we stand to gain more from the players in their natural wings.

“I am an optimist. It is not over yet for the Super Eagles in Russia, especially given their traditional resilient spirit.

“I have no doubt also that they understand that they bear the expectations and hopes of over 180 million people on their shoulders.

“But, we owe them total support and prayers,” he said.

The Super Eagles will meet Iceland on Friday in their next group game.

Iceland had played a one-all draw with Argentina in their opening encounter, leaving Nigeria at the bottom of the group at the moment. (NAN)

  • World Cup: Nigeria can still qualify from group stage — Oparaku

As Nigeria continue to lament the 0-2 loss to the Vatreni of Croatia, former Super Eagles defender, Mobi Okparaku, says the team could still qualify from their Group D.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles failed to win or draw their opening encounter with Croats, thereby joining fellow Africans, Egypt and Morocco in losing their opening Matches.

While the Pharoahs of Egypt lost 0-1 to Uruguay, Morocco also fell 0-1 to Iran.

Okparaku told NAN on Sunday in Owerri that Super Eagles could qualify if they stepped up their game both in the midfield and attack in their subsequent games.

NAN reports that Okparaku was part of the Nigerian victorious team that won the Olympic tournament in 1996 and also made the list for France 1998 World Cup.

He said the Croatians were more technical than the Eagles players both in the first and second half of the game.

Analysing the match, Okparaku said that though the odds were against Nigeria but Super Eagles could still make up in their remaining two games.

According to him, Nigeria are so far trailing with zero point in the group, while Croatia is on top with three points.

“Argentina who drew with Iceland in the first encounter in the group follow with one point as well as Iceland.
Opkaraku, who is the Team Manager, Heartland FC of Owerri, said: “Our attack is weak and the midfield is also weak, so the technical department should work on these observations in our next game.

“The Super Eagles coach should also be tactical in studying games because I was not too comfortable with the late changes he made.’’

Meanwhile, a former Director of sports in Imo, Mr Kingsley Ibe, blamed Super Eagles woes in their World Cup opener on the team’s Manager Gernot Rohr.

He said that Rohr was unable to read the game against Croatia and discover lapses on time.

He added that the late changes caused Nigeria the game and advised that “Kelechi Iheanacho must start every Nigerian game’’.

Ibe blamed the coach for allowing captain of the team, Mikel Obi, to play till 75 minutes without any impact.

Nigeria will face Iceland in their second group game the tournament on June

  • Russia 2018: Okocha blames loss to Croatia on lack of creativity

Former Super Eagles midfield maestro, Jay Jay Okocha has blamed the team’s 0-2 loss to Croatia in their opening World Cup game on lack of creativity.

Okocha, who was a guest on Super Sports TV, said the team lost because the players played in wrong positions which didn’t bring out the best in them.

“We didn’t have a creative midfielder today. Mikel Obi has been a great servant but I think his best position is sitting in front of the back four.

“We saw him play as a defensive midfielder in Chelsea and he did so well,” he said.

The veteran player also added that Alex Iwobi was the most creative midfielder in the national team at the moment but playing him as a winger “was taking his strength from him”.

“Iwobi can play from the wings in Arsenal because there is a Mesut Ozil who brings creativity.

“I think the only reason why we lost this game is because our players played in the wrong positions and we didn’t get the best out of them,” he added.

Nigeria will take on Iceland on June 22 and play their last Group D game against Argentina on June 26. (NAN)

  • Brazilian president sends message of support to Super Eagles

Brazil’s President Michel Temer has expressed his best wishes for Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Temer made this statement of support when Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama,  paid him a courtesy visit in Brasilia.
A statement by the Media Aide to Onyeama, Ms Sarah Sanda, on Saturday in Abuja, said the minister was on a week working visit to Brazil.
Temer’s support was coming as Nigeria’s Super Eagles kick off their Russia 2018 World Cup campaign on Saturday, with a match against Croatia.
The President of Brazil stressed the importance of the historic warm relations between both countries, which has been enhanced by the visit of Nigeria’s Foreign Minister to Brazil.
Earlier, Onyeama said the objective of his trip was to strengthen the long standing cordial political, economic and socio-cultural relations between Nigeria and Brazil.
According to him,  it is also to explore new areas of mutual benefit for the two countries.

  • Russia 2018: Pogba earns France victory as technology plays part

Paul Pogba scored a late goal to earn France a hard-fought 2-1 win against Australia in their opening 2018 FIFA World Cup Group C game on Saturday.

The Video Assistant Referee played a major part in the game, especially in the decision of Pogba’s goal.

The midfielder, who was criticized after recent below-par performances, found the back of the net with a lob after a fine one-two with second-half substitute, Olivier Giroud, nine minutes from time.

  • Portugal, Spain good to go, says Onigbinde

Coach Akinade Onigbinde of FRSC FC of Abujasays Portugal and Spain are teams to watch in the ongoing FIFA World Cup, tagged Russia 2018.

Onigbinde made the assertion on Saturday while reacting to the Group B match between the duo that ended 3-3 on Friday.

Onigbinde saluted the mastery of the game by the two countries which, he said, was exciting and very entertaining for Sochi spectators.

“The two countries have proved that they are good to go, definitely, I see them qualifying from that Group.

“We saw two teams that were very good in all faculties, the defence, midfield and attack,” he said.

The coach particularly lauded the efforts of Cristiano Ronaldo whose spectacular contributions gave Portugal a draw.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in the match at the age of 33.

His opening goal came in the fourth minute having converted a penalty into goal.

The world’s reigning Footballer of the Year scored again in the 44th minute giving his country a lead after Spain’s Diego Costa’s goal to level up.

However, Diego Costa scored the second goal for Spain in the 55th minute, while Nacho overlapped to make up his mistake at the third minute with a goal.

Portugal will be slugging it out against Morocco on Wednesday, while Spain pits against Iran. (NAN)

  • Russia 2018: Fans urge Eagles to redeem Africa’s image

As the Super Eagles face  Croatia on Saturday in their group D opener, football fans in Ebonyi have urged the team to redeem Africa’s image at the on-going World Cup in Russia by defeating their opponent.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Egypt and Morocco lost their opening games 0-1 to Uruguay and Iran respectively on Friday, to record poor starts for the continent.

The fans, who spoke with NAN on Saturday in Abakaliki, reminded the Eagles that Africa places its hopes on them to show good example to Tunisia and Senegal, who would play subsequently.

Emmanuel Utobo, Director of Sports in Ebonyi, urged the players to overcome the pressure resulting from the burden of expectations placed on them.

“The players should play with utmost calmness, adhere to coaches’ instructions and disregard whatever views people might have about them.

“They should not lose hope in spite of any situation during the match as exemplified by Portugal during its 3-3 draw with Spain on Friday.

“The Portuguese, spearheaded by the indefatigable hat trick hero, Christiano Ronaldo, equalised late into the match as they were not disorganised in spite of surrendering a 2-1 lead in the first half,” he said.

Bright Nwaneri,  a football fan, urged Coach Gernot Rohr to ensure his midfield is not outclassed by the Croatians.

“The Croatians boast of a deadly midfield trio of Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Mateo Kovacic; Rohr should neutralise their onslaughts by fielding more players in that position.

“The Eagles should also play without tension and defend collectively, to cover the inadequacies of first choice goalkeeper, Francs Uzoho,” he said.

Jude Anyama, a Soccer Viewing Centre Operator, advised the football authorities not to exert too much pressure on the players.

“Every decision taken on the match should be left for the coach alone, so that Nigerians would hold him accountable for any result that emanates from it.

“We have passed the stage of querying his choice of players for the tournament, or those to be fielded during matches, but should accept any decision he takes,” he said.

Chief Mbakwe Oloh, a transporter and football fan, said Nigeria does not rely on a particular star for victory, pointing out that a situation of over-reliance on a star was the undoing of Egypt.

“Egypt’s problem is over reliance on Mohammed Salah and its performance gives credence to the fact that without Salah, there is no Egypt.

“Nigeria is lucky not to find itself in such situation and this will give the players, the impetus to showcase their talents at the world cup,” he said. (NAN)

  • Praises galore for Ronaldo

Some football enthusiasts on Friday said that Cristiano Ronaldo had  set a very high standard at the Russia FIFA World Cup which would be difficult to break for a very long time to come.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Portugal’s irrepressible captain Ronaldo scored a stunning late free kick to complete a  hat-trick and rescue a dramatic 3-3 draw in a thrilling  Group B match against neighbours Spain on Friday.

By far the best game of the tournament so far, Spain forward Diego Costa notched a brace before Nacho put them 3-2 ahead with a brilliant third only for Ronaldo to snatch a point two minutes to the end of the game.

Ronaldo became the fourth player to score in four World Cups after Uwe Seeler, Pele and Miroslav Klose. He had also scored in the last four European Championship tournaments.

A cross section of football enthusiasts who spoke to NAN in separate interviews in Abuja said Ronaldo had set the competition alight so early with his sensational performance, adding that he was arguably the best player in the world

Musa Talle, the Chairman, FCT Football Association said he lacked words to describe Ronaldo’s performance against Spain.

“It was indeed an unbelievable display from the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo.

“There are no words to describe what we witnessed tonight. It was a simply sublime, stunning, spectacular and sensational performance by Ronaldo in Sochi.

“It left everyone speechless and breathless. To do what he did on that stage; the biggest in world football, tells you the calibre of player he is,” he said.

Godwin Bamigboye, the Chairman, FCT Football Coaches Association said Ronaldo had indeed replied his critics with an outstanding performance.

“I have never seen anything as exciting in world football for a very long time. I don’t get excited about football that much, but tonight was probably the most excited I have been in a very long time.

“What a performance! People who had doubts about Ronaldo saying that his legs have gone and that he isn’t quite the same player,  I bet he has made them have a rethink.

“This guy has been outstanding from the word go and has indeed set a very high standard at the World Cup which will be difficult to beat for a very long time to come,” said.

Babatunde Bada, a renowned football pundit said that the game was a perfect stage for Ronaldo to further prove his worth to the world.

“He is a talisman, he is the man that sets the benchmark.

“The game itself presented a perfect opportunity for him to set the records straight about who the best footballer in the world is and I think he has left no one in doubt that he truly is the best.

“The intensity of the game was electrifying and the game had everything about a football match one could possibly think of,” he said.

“Everything you want to see in a game so early in a competition was dished out to billions of football fans all over the world tonight,” he said”

Paul Aigbogun, the Head Coach of Enyimba International Footballl Club of Aba said Ronaldo was focused and delivered when it mattered most, adding that his performance could be compared to that of the legendary Diego Maradona.

“It was a marvellous spectacle and Ronaldo won our hearts. He had the eye of the tiger and looked really focused tonight.

“I have watched Ronaldo in recent times playing for Real Madrid in the Champions league, where it seems like he was coasting a little bit but tonight he was really sharp and fully focused as if he really had a point to prove.

“You could see that he was alive from the beginning, during the warm up and from his first few touches at the start of the game.

“I have to say this is probably one of the most complete performances I have ever experienced in a World Cup, maybe comparable to Maradona’s performance against England.

“This was unbelievable in every aspect,” he said.

Garba Lawal, an ex-international said Ronaldo was a perfectionist and knew when and how to deliver at the biggest stage.

“You know what is incredible about Ronaldo is that he has the ability to deliver at a big stage. The bigger the stage, the more he produces outstanding performances.

“We all felt it, especially from the last goal he scored from 30 yards out. He got over the ball, tucked his shorts up, took few steps backward and a deep breathe. Everyone knew he meant business.

“To deliver that perfection at that stage, this level, is just beyond words” he said.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicked off on June 14 is expected to end on July 15 in Russia. (NAN)
