  • Easter beyond the Cross: Church Leaders urge Nigerians on love, sacrifice

Easter beyond the Cross: Church Leaders urge Nigerians on love, sacrifice

As Christians across the world celebrate Easter Sunday, it presents more than a time of joy—it offers a critical moment for introspection. Commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Easter stands as a powerful symbol of unconditional love, sacrifice, and redemption. In a country like Nigeria, grappling with political instability, economic hardship, and social division, church leaders believe the message of Easter must transcend tradition and transform the nation’s conscience. ADEOLA OGUNLADE spoke with key church leaders who shared their reflections on the meaning of Easter and its urgent relevance in Nigeria today.

Easter, call to spiritual rededication — Baba Aladura Israel Akinadewo, President, OAIC.

For Baba Aladura Israel Akinadewo, President of the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), the Easter period is full of rich spiritual lessons that trace from Ash Wednesday through Palm Sunday to Passion Week, it is a demonstration of the memories of the remarkable sacrifice of Jesus Christ to humanity.

“Jesus fasted 40 days to confront Satan. That shows us the power of separating from sin through discipline and devotion,” he said.

Akinadewo additionally posited that Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-19) elicited several landmarks for believers to learn forgiveness, use the House of Prayer for things that will glorify God, and be selfless in Christians’ service to God and humanity.

He encouraged Christians to see Easter as a season to renew their walk with God and focus on eternal things.

“True Easter celebration is not about activities or pageantry—it is about rededication, forgiveness, and prayer. We must focus on the salvation race,” he said.

Akinadewo also warned leaders and believers against materialism, calling it a contradiction of the values Easter represents.

“Leaders must embrace simplicity and selflessness. Displaying wealth and pride is antithetical to Christian growth and humility.”

He also dismissed critics who question the celebration of Easter, labelling them as “Holier-than-thou Christians” who often miss the spiritual essence of the season.

Love that redeems — Emmanuel Udofia, Former Primate, The African Church

The former Primate of the African Church, Emmanuel Udofia, declared that Easter is the ultimate symbol of sacrificial love.

According to him, Easter is a profound symbol of God’s sacrificial love for humanity. He adds that it is a time to reflect on the depth of Christ’s selfless act—dying not because we were perfect or deserving but because we needed redemption.

“Jesus Christ didn’t come to die for the good or righteous; He came to rescue us from sin and darkness.

“He offered Himself not because we were good or worthy, but because without Him, we couldn’t fulfil God’s purpose in our generation,”  Udofia explained.

He described Christ’s death and re spiritually and morally so that people could live truthfullysurrection as a mission to set humanity free—spiritually and morally—so that people could live in truth and worship God sincerely.

Udofia believes the message of Easter goes beyond religion; it calls for unconditional love and unity among Nigerians.

“Every Nigerian, regardless of tribe, religion, or background, should see themselves as God’s creation—made in His image.

“When we truly love one another, there’s no room for hate, division, or destruction,” he said.

He emphasized that love is the foundation for national healing. According to him, many of the crises facing the country stem from a lack of genuine love and compassion.

“Easter teaches us that love forgives, love builds, and love unites,”

“If we embrace that, we can begin to rebuild our communities and restore peace in Nigeria.”

“When we love, we don’t kill. We don’t hate. We don’t slander.

“Love covers a multitude of sins and builds communities,” he added.

Power of remembrance, selflessness” — Archbishop Joseph Ojo, Calvary Kingdom Church

Archbishop Joseph Imariabe Ojo, General Overseer of Calvary Kingdom Church International, believes the essence of Easter is remembering the price Christ paid.

“The sinless man died for the sinful. That’s the essence of Easter, adding that “Jesus paid a debt He didn’t owe. That’s a sacrifice.”

Ojo warned against the intellectualisation or theological debates that attempt to undermine the truth of Christ’s death and resurrection.

“No argument can change what we believe. Jesus died and rose again. That is the foundation of our salvation,” he said.

He said Easter should stir not just reflection, but repentance and a recommitment to live for others.

“If we truly remember His sacrifice, then we should also be ready to sacrifice. Our leaders, especially, must learn that true leadership is about giving up something for the good of others

Preach truth, not hyper-grace — Bishop Chidi, President, Pentecostal Ministers Forum

For Bishop Chidi, President of the Pentecostal Ministers Forum (PMF), Easter is a moment for the Nigerian church to recalibrate.

“Despite the massive presence of churches in Nigeria, we remain one of the most corrupt and fraudulent nations.

“Why? Because many churches have derailed from preaching the truth,” he said.

He urged pastors and church leaders to use the Easter season as a time to return to the gospel of repentance and righteous living.

“We need to preach the original message of the cross—condemning sin and calling for transformation,” he said. “Not hyper-grace messages that make people comfortable in wrongdoing.”

He warned that unless churches begin to stand boldly for truth and integrity, the impact of Christianity in Nigeria will continue to decline.

“Easter is about the power of transformation. That same power must reflect in our pulpits and our people.”

  • C&S announces 56th Mount Horeb Ascension, charge prayer to confront insecurity

C&S announces 56th Mount Horeb Ascension, charge prayer to confront insecurity

Amid growing concerns over insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria, the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church Worldwide (C&S Worldwide) has called on Nigerians to turn to prayer as a powerful tool for national healing and transformation.

During a press conference held in Lagos, the church announced its upcoming 56th Mount Horeb Ascension and Thanksgiving, scheduled to take place from May 4 to 11, 2025, at Mount Horeb. The event, themed ‘Double Glory,’ marks the 56th anniversary of the sacred pilgrimage and is expected to draw worshippers from across the globe.

Speaking at the briefing, Conference General Secretary, Prophet A.O. Samaye said the week-long programme would feature a variety of spiritual and interactive activities including keynote addresses, workshops, seminars, games, presentations, spiritual fitness programmes, and a night vigil—all culminating in the 2025 Mount Horeb Ascension.

In light of Nigeria’s current challenges, particularly the rising tide of violence, kidnappings, and social unrest, the church is intensifying its call for united, sustained prayer across all denominations.

“We must unite in faith and fervently seek God’s intervention. The rising tide of insecurity threatens not just our safety but the very fabric of our society. Our leaders need wisdom and direction, and the church must stand in the gap,” said Prophet Dr. Emmanuel Abiodun Alogbo, the Spiritual Father of the church.

He emphasized that the church’s responsibility goes beyond prayer to include spiritual leadership and moral advocacy, particularly in encouraging the government to prioritize the well-being of the people.

“Government at all levels must place the welfare of Nigerians at the heart of their policies.

“There’s a need for urgent, direct intervention to tackle insecurity. Without adequate security, there can be no development,” he stated.

On the economic front, Prophet Alogbo urged collaboration between civil society, faith-based organizations, and the government to ease the growing burden of inflation and price hikes on the population.

“We call on civil organizations to support government efforts while also asking citizens to exercise patience as long-term policies take effect.

“Importantly, the federal government must revive and operationalize the country’s refineries to ensure affordable and stable fuel prices. That’s a critical step toward economic stability,”,” he said.

Beyond the formal Mount Horeb celebrations, C&S Worldwide will host community prayer walks and special intercessory services aimed at promoting peace, justice, and sustainable development.

The church’s appeal comes at a crucial time when many Nigerians are grappling with anxiety over worsening security and persistent economic challenges. The leadership believes that prayer when combined with righteous action, can ignite change at both spiritual and societal levels.

“The message to all Christians—regardless of denomination—is clear: we must pray without ceasing,” Prophet Alogbo urged. “We believe that through prayer and action, we can bring about the change we desire and the protection our people desperately need.”

  • Easter: Season of healing, forgiveness power —Uma Ukpai

Easter: Season of healing, forgiveness power —Uma Ukpai

    • By Ayoyinka Jegede

Renowned televangelist and spiritual leader, Rev. (Dr.) Uma Ukpai, has called on Nigerians and Christians around the world to embrace the true essence of Easter — a season of sacrifice, healing, forgiveness, and divine restoration.

Ukpai, an octogenarian, philanthropist, and Founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, is widely respected for his profound teachings on the supernatural, his deep compassion for humanity, and his holistic ministry approach that bridges the spiritual and physical needs of individuals.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Ayoyinka Jegede, the revered man of God shares timeless insights on the significance of Easter, the messages it carries, and why embracing the resurrected Christ is the key to lasting transformation in life and society.

    The significance of Easter

Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, which is a foundational belief in Christianity.

For Christians, Easter symbolises new beginnings and victory over death. It signifies that through faith in Jesus Christ, believers can receive salvation. The resurrection of Christ is seen as a triumph over sin and death, which gives believers hope for their own future and eternal life with God.

It’s a reflection on the sacrificial life that Jesus Christ, our Saviour, exhibited. And Easter celebration re-enacts the suffering, death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

This is very important to Christianity because Christ’s death and resurrection is the evidence of our Justification. Easter shows Christ’s death and resurrection and the hope to overcome our sins. It shows Christ’s victory over principalities and power, making an open show of them. It likewise signifies Christ’s victory over death and the grave, which is our victory as Christians. The Bible says that if Christ were not resurrected, then all those who have died would perish. Without resurrection, our gospel is in vain. We celebrate Easter because it is important for the church to continue to rehash the story.

Read Also: Ekiti APC leaders endorse Tinubu, Oyebanji for re-election

Easter stands as proof that everything that Jesus said about himself was true. What Jesus said he would do, he did, and what he promised meant.

The significance of Easter shows that knowing Jesus, who He is, is the solution to all of life’s problems and the remedy for all of life’s ills. The Great Physician, the Miracle Worker. And as you walk with Him, you will see the blind receive their sight and the deaf their hearing. The mentally ill will receive soundness of mind, the crippled and paralyzed will walk, and life will be restored to the dead.

    Prophetic anointing, divine power

Everywhere Jesus went, because of the anointing on Him, He produced divine visitation, and when heaven visits a man, the curtain of his reproach will be removed and destroyed. And his mountain that blocks his way will be leveled. Heaven can visit a man through the prophet it has sent to be a blessing to such a man. This act to an ordinary man, contradicts common sense. How can an ordinary handkerchief bring healing to the sick? But a born-again child of God carries the power of God, and God is at work in his life. The transferable anointing of the power of God makes miracles easy by the hands of those who walk with God and believe in His ability to make the impossible possible.

Indeed, wherever Jesus goes, he leaves a trail of testimonies of sound minds and healing bodies

In order to receive the healing that Jesus came to give, you must know Him personally and know him experientially, emphatically and as a man knows the back of his hand. He is the source of life and He is life itself; therefore, receive the person of Jesus and you receive the life of Jesus, for your spirit, mind and body.

The Bible says in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God and the word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us. Jesus Christ is the word of God. John 1:1,14. Again, Jesus is the Word. Therefore, to receive the Healer and His miraculous power, receive the Word. When you receive the word, you will receive Christ the Healer, Christ the Saviour and Christ the Redeemer. The book of Psalms 107:20 says; He sent his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. In Bible days, a Roman army officer, whose servant was very ill, came to Jesus saying, “Speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed” (Matthew 8:8).

    What to learn from Easter

The message we should learn from Easter is the message of sacrifice, forgiveness. God’s only begotten Son came to this world, sacrificed His life that we might be redeemed. Since He laid down His life for us, we ought to make sacrifices for others also, and that is the message. There are so many things to learn from Easter. For example, while on the cross, Jesus prayed to the Father and said: “forgive them for they know not what they are doing.” For a man who was in so much pain, to whom people had done such excruciating things and who endured such misery in the hands of people He came to help and was still able to forgive. To me, that is something wonderful.

We must learn forgiveness from Easter. Offences will come, people will hurt one another, but at Easter we must learn to forgive ourselves. Easter gives us room to reflect and stretch forth an olive branch and forgive one another. We should not do it physically and then forget about the spiritual significance.

    Benefits

Easter brings the solution to all life’s problems and offers the remedy for all life’s ills. The Lord Jesus Christ, the great Physician, the Miracle worker died for our sins and resurrected so that we might enjoy numerous benefits which include: Salvation, justification, healings, soundness of mind, restoration, the blind receives their sight, indeed, wherever He goes He leaves a trail of happy hearts, sound minds and healthy bodies.

     Charge

Seeing the benefit of Easter, everyone should give his or her life to Jesus Christ and accept Jesus Christ as their Personal Lord and Saviour. Receiving Jesus is not just a story from scripture, but as the Living Word, the source of life and hope.
