Politicians should not replicate horrors of failed States – Bishop Marioghae

A Philippines-based preacher, Bishop Tony Marioghae, has warned leaders not to replicate the horrors of failed states in Nigeria.

He urged Nigerians to desire and work towards transformational change in all ramifications.

He cautioned that Nigerians must be prepared to make great sacrifices towards 2023 to avoid Nigeria becoming a failed State.

In a statement he signed, Marioghae said transformational change is never easy.

He said: “Nigerians should not replicate the horrors of failed states in our nation through pride, entitlement, and selfishness. We must act decisively to tackle our problems before the country slides into irreversible chaos and destruction.

“Since other nations have taken the prime spots in science and technology, we can forge our path distinctly by standing tall as the world’s moral authority.

“Nigeria is one of the most prayerful nations in the world. Therefore, moral integrity dictates that our actions should no longer contradict what we profess.”

Change, the Bishop said, demands sacrifice through bold and purpose-driven leadership.

“This process is painful, but it is always productive and beneficial to a nation if the restless aspiration of the people is genuinely inspired by a shared vision and channelled towards a revolutionary but godly agenda – nation-building.

He cautioned that Nigeria needs reform-minded leaders to take the nation from poverty to prosperity, wasteful spending to thrifty planning, and from a consumer political entity to an economically vibrant producer nation, adding that this is how we can achieve wealth, influence and earn the respect of the global community.

“A country with so many abundant mineral resources should not be at the mercy of hawkish international financial institutions with questionable lending habits.

” Unfortunately, most of our present corrupt and self-centred political leaders lack noble qualities. They are all interested in validating corruption through frivolous borrowings, which has impoverished the nation.

“Nevertheless, we have the workforce and resources to achieve this objective, except for courageous leaders with the moral willpower to combat lawlessness.”

He said 2023 will provide Nigerians with the political opportunity to fire bad leaders and hire good and competent ones through the ballot boxes.

“Therefore, we can’t afford to sell our votes. Selling your vote will deprive you of the moral authority to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions in office. Non-accountability promotes corruption and nepotism, which is detrimental to success.”

‘Every nation, he added, “reflects the people’s ethics, principles and laws. Values drive principles, while principles shape national character. It is the character of a people that exalts or degrades the nation.

“Nigeria’s problems are caused by wrong values deeply embodied in our political system. Decades of choosing convenience over conviction, political rhetoric over reason, tribalism over truth, pleasure over principles, parochial interests over purpose and blind power grab over purposeful planning and posterity have significantly damaged our capacity to develop exponentially as a nation.”

‘To correct this evil, Marioghae said “we must strive to combat the culture of corruption, deception and sycophancy firmly entrenched in every significant institution in Nigeria. We need a brave and dynamic leader who has the audacity of faith and the moral courage to confront the tiny cabal who think that they own the country, the bandits who have seized our highways for personal gain, and the terrorists who are trying to turn Nigeria into a dark demonic feudal system in the name of religion, and the local and international cabal who have continued to plunder our vast natural resources detrimental to the people’s welfare.”

  • NNCC greets Kukah at 70

    NNCC greets Kukah at 70

The Nigeria National Christian Coalition (NNCC), a pro-Christian political organisation, has enjoined all Nigerians, home and abroad, to emulate Father Matthew Hassan Kukah for his good works, especially his ability to stand up against spiritual immorality, evils in government and taking a stand in support of the hapless common man at all times.

In a statement signed by the convener of the organisation, Apostle Titi Oluwadare, NNCC said Kukah, who clocks 70 this week, has been a beacon of hope in Nigeria.

The group said he is one of the few Christian leaders whose lives and activities mirror the life of Jesus and the apostles of yore.

The statement reads: “In a world where Church leaders are under heavy surveillance and social media castigation, Father Kukah is seen and hailed as one of those who have not bowed to Baal, a source of hope, caution, truth and stability. As a protagonist of peace, he has been able to properly balance his priestly role to his flock with his role as a guardian in national politics.

“On different occasions, Father Kukah has tweaked the ear of governments when they veer off track and has made himself available for service in various committees, bringing to bear his credibility on the committees, thus giving them the believability they require to perform their duties and carry Nigerians along.

“It is within this matrix that NNCC finds it convenient to invite him to the Meet the Church Conference, which comes up in Abuja on September 20, 2022. He is one of the speakers invited to help negotiate and chart a new direction for Nigeria and the Nigerian Church in a season of spiritual anomie where the Church is being swept aside from the limelight and relevance of national politics.

“NNCC says they can only pray that the Lord would give Father Kukah many more years so he would be of service not only to the Church but to Nigeria so that the dream of the Church for righteousness to take over the earth would be a reality even in his lifetime.”

It is a season of celebrations at the Love of Christ Generation Church, Cherubim and Seraphim, Lagos as the Church celebrates 15 years of divine ministration by Rev. Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi.

Ajayi, who is a philanthropist, has touched and changed many lives through her ministry and humanitarian foundation. She has dedicated much of her life supporting grassroots initiatives which have seen her touch thousands of lives and received numerous awards.

Ajayi whose charity foundation, Esther Ajayi Foundation empowered 10 traders with N500,000 last year, is a Grand/Life Matron to many charity organisations, as well as various Non-Government-Organisations across many communities in Africa.

In 2020, she commissioned the new office building of the Special Protection Unit, Base 2 Lagos of the Nigeria Police, a multimillion-naira building, which was single-handedly built by her.

The church will also be celebrating its first anniversary on the 4th of September. The Lagos centre of the church was inaugurated on September 5, 2021, and consecrated by Pastor Enoch Adeboye and other anointed ministers of God in Christendom from different denominations. The first congregational service was held on September 12, 2021.

Several activities have been lined up for the week-long double celebrations.

According to Rev. Mother Ajayi, “the LOCI is a force for unification in christ and a symbol of the oneness of the body of Christ. “It’s important to promote unity in Christ and oneness of the message of salvation of humanity as ordained by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. That is one mission we cherish and will hold on to, even to the end of time.”

The formation of the Love of Christ Generation Church (Cherubim and Seraphim) was inspired by a revelation in 2007 “Where the Glory of God Shines” was established by Reverend Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi in London. About 18 people worshipped on that day in the family house at Edmonton.

Today, the church boasts of over 10,000 worshipers combined at the Lagos and London LOCI centres.

  • LoveWorld tackles languages extinction with 7,000 translations

LoveWorld tackles languages extinction with 7,000 translations

Rhapsody of Realities, a devotion publication, has now been translated in 7,000 languages, says the Director of Operations, LoveWorld Publishing, Pastor Lola Aisida.

The Rhapsody of Realities, a publication of LoveWorld Publishing Ltd., is a daily devotional, authored by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of The Christ Embassy.

Aisida said that 42 per cent of the 7,139 languages spoken world-wide were endangered, but the publication of the Rhapsody of Realities in 7,000 languages was to ensure that no language went into extinction.

She said on Friday that with the 7,000 languages translation, Rhapsody of Realities was now the most translated book in the world.

According to her, of the 7,000 languages translated, 520 are Nigerian dialects, exceeding the 502 officially listed languages in Nigeria.

”Never in the history of the world, and in all the record books of Guinness Book of World Records, has any literary material – be it document, film, writing, book, or any piece of historical or modern parchment – been translated into 7,000 languages.

”The meteoric rise of the Rhapsody of Realities devotional to the most-coveted spot as the world’s No. 1 daily devotional and now Most Translated Book in the world began with first edition published in the English Language by LoveWorld Publishing.

”Twenty-two years after, LoveWorld Publishing has grown into a vast network of publishers spread across several countries,” she said.

The director said that the work of translation was deployed by a massive army of translators, who applied due diligence processes in delivering Rhapsody of Realities to all the 7,000 languages.

She said that by any standard, the work of translation was not an easy one, if not, the world’s popularly literary pieces would had long been made available in all languages.

”On the contrary, authenticated records show that the most translated short film documentary is in eleven translations; the most translated short film has 22 translations.

”The most translated document, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, produced by United Nations in 1948 has been translated into only 370 languages as of 2019.

”And, even the acclaimed Most Professionally Translated Author in the World, Agatha Christie has her books in only 100+ languages.

”There are 7,139 languages spoken today, but a report says 42 per cent of these languages are endangered.

“These statistics posed a global challenge fit only for a global publishing house that transcends the inadequacies of the publishing space.

”LoveWorld Publishing will ensure that no language goes extinct as Rhapsody of Realities will remain widely distributed month after month in over 7,000 languages of the world,” Aisida said.

Also speaking, the Abuja Zonal Pastor, Christ Embassy, Mr Dipo Esho, appreciated Pastor Oyakhilome for bringing men into the reality of the original purpose for which they were created, through the book.

Esho said the ministry would ensure that the book continued to reach all communities in nations of the world.

He said that the purpose of the book was ”to bring men back to their creator for their purpose to be fulfilled”.

According to him, testimonies abound of people in hopeless situations who have got the reason to live again by reading the book.

A user, Dr Chris Iyamu said that the Rhapsody of Realities had been transforming lives and mind enlightening.

Mr Michael Egbo, who testified to being the first person who took the devotional out of the country said the book has been of a huge blessing to him and his family.

Egbo, who has been supplying the devotional to Ghana Prisons, said through the devotional over 500 prisoners gave their lives to Jesus Christ and one of them is now a Pastor of the Gospel in Togo. (NAN

  • ‘No matter how close it seems, Nigeria can never crash’

‘No matter how close it seems, Nigeria can never crash’

The General Overseer of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries (GOMERM) Lagos Dr James Akanbi spoke with reporters on national issues ahead of the Zion 2022 Power Conference of the church, which ends today. Excerpts:

You clocked 60 in January. How does hitting the milestone feel?

I thank God that I was able to clock 60. It was a great joy for me. It was not about the age but the impact the Lord has enabled me to make in life at 60. Life is not about duration but a donation. It is not how long you lived but how much impact you made. I thank God for the few achievements I can point at 60. It is not just looking at the numerical strength of the people around me in ministry. By the special grace of God, I have some thousands of people around me in ministry in about eight countries of the world where the flag of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries is flying. I thank God for the pillars He has raised for the ministry. There is a son that will always be a source of joy to me in the ministry. The very first day we started the ministry he came in a drunkard but today he is a regional overseer in the ministry. He is anointed and soundly mature in the Lord and still growing. I sent him to several Bible Schools. He is like a trophy I am looking at in this ministry.

If you were a civil servant, you would be winding down. How soon do you plan to slow down after hitting 60?

If you are on the right route and you slow down other people will overtake you. When you are at the centre of the will of God you cannot slow down. Being at the centre of God’s will gives one joy to move on. Age should actually ginger you to do more. I look at Noah when he was commissioned. I look at Papa Kumuyi; a wonderful mentor who I first met in 1981 as his student at the International Bible Training Centre (IBTC) of the Deeper Life Bible Church. Sitting down with him, I was able to see what he looks at the future to be like, and I said to myself, I want to pick a future like his. If at 80 he is saying he feels 30, what should a small boy like me say? When you are at the centre of the will of God for your life you will definitely have great future for your life; you get going. You don’t want to slow down because you see what God called you to do manifesting.

The theme for the conference is Higher Ground. What informed it?

We have been on a particular level for almost 23 years now. When the Lord spoke to John, the Revelator, He told him come up! When God summons you to come up, it means He has a new agenda for you. When God summons you in that form it means He wants to raise the boundary. He wants to show you things you have never seen. He wants to restructure you and your system. He wants to do a new configuration for the system you are heading and the lives around you.

Higher Ground Life, as the theme of this year’s Zion Power Conference, which I received from the Lord, is a higher level of life. It is doing things in another and different way. It is life becoming better than where we are now. It is the ministry work becoming more effective and more efficient. God is actually saying there is a better thing up there, come and see it! I will deposit it into you and you go out there to manifest it. That is what the conference is all about.

What is your take on the church’s involvement in active politics hitherto avoided ahead of 2023?

With the situation that is playing out now in Nigeria politics and governance, the Nigerian Church and Christians generally will be forced to get into active politics. There is Christian party in some countries. In Nigeria politics, it will take a very solid calling to get there. Calling is so powerful that it makes way for itself if it is genuine and the instruction from God is clear. If you have a calling into politics, definitely you will make it. But if you are not called, you will be cursed. We had some Christians in politics in the past but they messed them up. With the way it is going, we may end up having a Christian Party in Nigeria someday.

With the cloud of fears, agitations, uncertainties and religion apprehension, do you foresee Nigeria crashing someday?

Nigeria cannot crash. I believe God has not given up on this nation. Nigeria’s present situation is not as worse as the situation in Ezekiel 37 when the people were completely hopeless but God still raised a great army out of them. Yes, at the moment Nigeria is facing a lot of problems so serious that Nigerians do not trust one another anymore. The politics of religion has never come to the front burners as it is now.

There is no doubting the fact that Nigeria is treading the path of crisis with the APC Muslim-Muslim ticket. But I believe God knows how to have His way. I believe the numbers of the righteous people in Nigeria are more than those in Sodom and Gomorrah.

I believe there are some people calling on God with a very pure heart for Nigeria. God will still help this nation. I believe Nigeria will not crash. I often say that we cannot expect the world to become better. The situations in Nigeria and in all other countries of the world will continue running like this till the End time but individuals can call on God to rectify their personal situations.

Leadership crisis rocks Ondo Cherubim & Seraphim Unification Church

Leadership crisis is rocking the Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church in Ondo State as a Prophet in the church, Kerubu Oluwagbemi, has cried out over plot to assassinate him.

Prophet Oluwagbemi said he escaped death by the whiskers when the gun pointed at him by the assassins failed to fire.

Oluwagbemi said they were after his life because he has been tipped to be the substantive Chairman the Ondo chapter of the church.

He said the incident happened at a branch of the church in Idanre, Idanre local government area.

According to him: “I am the Chairman to be of the Unification Church of Nigeria, Ondo state chapter. We were in a meeting of Unification Church of Nigeria, Ondo state chapter, in Idanre when, suddenly, some people came in. One of them was carrying a gun. They said they were asked to kill me.

“The gun did not fire when they pointed it at me but it fired when it was pointed in another direction and all of us ran away.

  • A call for global action on religious intolerance

A call for global action on religious intolerance

It is a long-established reality that religion – the belief in and worship of God or gods – has polarized households, tribes, communities, cities, and nations. The world cannot continue to act as though all is well amid the dangerous dimension religious differences have routed us. But how did the act of practicing faith lead to so much hate, division, persecution, and deaths?

I am from a family where more than 90 percent of the members are Muslims. My parents converted to Christianity in the 1970s after marriage in Igbesa, Ogun State, Nigeria. Mum had been seriously ill for weeks but returned to good shape days after she found healing in a church. Dad was always excited to share the story with all and sundry; the entire family had no problems with the couple as regards their choice of belief.

Growing up, one expected to witness the same accord; alas, the grass is not always greener on the other side. In many parts of the sphere, there are tales of brutality and heinous crimes committed by extremists, yet many are untold. While I agree that it is hard to de-radicalize and make humans accommodating, influential international organizations must devote more energy to engendering mutualism.

With over 200 million people, Nigeria has two regions (North and South) and six geopolitical zones (South-East, South-South, South-West, North-Central, North-East, and North-West). The South, predominantly Christian, has a population composed of Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups. The North is predominantly Muslim; the Hausa and Fulani are the dominant groups. Occasionally, disagreements snowball into crises with attendant destruction.

In May 2022, Deborah Samuel, a female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, was lynched for blasphemy against the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) after she expressed opposition to postings in a WhatsApp group created for updates about academic activities. Male colleagues seized her from the school security, stoned her to death, and set her body ablaze. This type of cool-blooded murder must not go on.

In reaction to the execution, renowned cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi stated that the Prophet Muhammad – in whose name Deborah died – never took any life despite insults. “Anyone who kills a non-Muslim whom they have agreed to live with peacefully will not smell the fragrance of paradise for 40 years”, he proclaimed. We need to spread messages like this on a global stage.

According to research conducted by the Pew Research Center, an American think tank based in Washington, D.C., the number of countries with remarkably high hostilities rose from 10 as of mid-2007 to 15 in the middle of 2010. In the analysis of 197 countries and territories, five countries – Egypt, Nigeria, Palestine, Russia, and Yemen – were added to the “very high” category.

For decades now, the powerhouse of West Africa has witnessed myriads of religious violence and killings in virtually all 36 states and the capital Abuja. Recent events provoked foreign countries to issue travel advisories to their citizens. The situation is not improving as the prevalence of attacks remains high; the same in climes where there are tensions over doctrines.

The Global Exchange on Religion in Society (GERIS), an initiative backed by the European Union (EU), has been working to connect positive experiences of coexistence among people of different or no faiths. The platform consists of more than 120 civil society leaders, experts, and journalists keen to see united humanity regardless of religious backgrounds.

During GERIS ‘Living Together’ team trip to Belgium, the Centre Against Islamophobia in Brussels expressed disappointment about the “discrimination against Muslim students in high schools”. At separate meetings with the AIF+ in Limburg, and the Almadina School in Antwerp, the officials complained that women with hijab do not get jobs despite being qualified.

However, we made pleasant observations about the institution. I admired the passion of the founders and staff, among them citizens of Middle East nations such as Syria and Iraq; their determination to ensure that the young get a quality education in an environment where they are comfortable. Also fascinating is the tutoring of the ‘green activist’ kids about the climate and the environment. Groups can replicate this initiative in their domain.

With urgency, leaders must bridge the gap and try to achieve lasting peace; the first place to start is the immediate environment. People should be allowed to practice their faith while the adherents should do so modestly. In Genk, eastern Belgium, the House of Abraham affirmed its support for cohesion. The organization, which promotes togetherness, also suggested regular interfaith dialogues.

Here, many religious heads agree that intolerance is a problem that needs tackling holistically. Part of the ways to foster camaraderie was the establishment of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in 1999. The association, comprising 50 members (25 Christians and 25 Muslims), is statutorily led by the incumbent Sultan of Sokoto and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

On the subject matter, the CAN reiterated its endorsement of concerted efforts to promote understanding. The Christian leadership demands an end to segregation. “The followers must not feel they are left out. The actions of political leaders and the government should not favor a section. If there is bias, issues that can be sorted out amicably may degenerate and get out of control”, CAN Chairman in Kaduna State, Joseph Hayab, warned.

The Nasrul-Lahi-il Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) said the role of the leaders has always been pivotal in giving a direction on which way peoples and nations should go. The Islamic organization advised governments to magnify voices that speak for unity, connect with political and religious leaders to create a movement for harmony and create spaces/facilities for inter-faith collaboration.

“Religious leaders can be an inspiration to others. To achieve their God-given role, they must rise above religious, ethnic, and other parochial sentiments and speak truth to power. They should be the conscience of the faithful and cooperate with the national leaders for world peace”, said Imam Ibrahim Olalekan Shodehinde, the Zonal Missioner in Ondo State.

Citing research, the Advocacy for Advancement of Peace and Harmony in Africa Initiative (ADAPHAI) observed that people who live together in harmony tend to gain more, unlike those in unending acrimony. The civil society group insists cordial coexistence remains fundamental because daily activities bring about “intrinsically inevitable” conflicts.

“The citizens should build a formidable mechanism for conflict resolution, be tolerant and uphold mutual respect. Countries must genuinely ensure justice and equity. They must be fair, irrespective of language and religion; build and sustain a system that treats everyone equally without any sentiment. They must constantly preach peace through vibrant institutions”, said Olaniyi Owolabi, the National Coordinator.

Women and Youths Empowerment Initiative (WOYEIN) Executive Director Husna Ibrahim stressed that no country could survive nor develop without peace. “There is a need for everyone to take responsibility and ensure peace. Governments must implement inclusive programs and policies and be neutral in their dealings. When people have some level of security and social protection, there is less crisis”, she contends.

No doubt, the religious split is a challenge that affects all genders, the young and old, citizens, and nations; all hands must be on deck to make the world a better place. It is high time those at the helm of affairs took more deliberate steps to de-escalate tension, guarantee order, inclusion, and lessen the polarity among members of religions.

The unity of purpose the world displayed during the COVID-19 pandemic was enough proof that goals are achievable if the majority work in unison. Although the issue of faith is personal and the view of humans less likely to change, religious, political, and government leaders should collectively lead a global action to encourage tolerance. The Holy Books preach peace, so why are we not tolerating ourselves?

Bishop seeks partnership with AGSOBA, others to fight vices

An Anglican Bishop, Rt Rev Emmanuel Adekunle, has expressed concerns over the high rate of drug abuse, internet fraud and rituals in the country.

He emphasised the need for partnership with Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys’ Association, (AGSOBA) and other stakeholders to help redirect the mind of pupils to the Lord.

Adekunle stated this at a sermon to mark 114th Founder’s Day Anniversary of Abeokuta Grammar School at the St Peter’s Cathedral Church, Ake Abeokuta.

He said the theme: Breaking the yoke of Cultism, ritual and drugs amongst secondary school, was a timely issue that needs urgent attention to avoid further moral degeneration.

“Idolatry, get-rich-quick syndrome, drug abuse are fast engulfing our young ones. This is the evil and we are at risk of losing more to join them until something urgent is done,” he said.

The cleric, who took his text from Exodus 20:3, said idolatry and ritualism are sinful.

Adekunle explained the earlier the pupils are exposed to the dangers of drugs, rituals and cultism, the earlier they run away from it.

Bishop Adekunle challenged the church, state, parents, elders and other stakeholders to help youths in finding the right focus in life.

The cleric appreciated the President General, Chief Sunday Oduntan, for taking up the initiative to return AGSOBA Founder’s day thanksgiving to the church, which is a laudable step.

He prayed for more robust relationship between the church and the school to instil moral among youths, saying education started from the temple.
