The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has called on the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to formulate policies that would strengthen families.

The church also urged the ministries of education of all African countries not to yield to pressures to infiltrate the school curriculum with inappropriate contents.

The Church’s Director of Communication for Lagos and Abuja chapter, Ikpe Nkanang, disclosed this in Abuja, while  briefing reporters on the outcome of the recent conference titled, ‘Strengthening Marriages,’ which is the fifth edition in Africa.

Nkanang said African governments should resist pressures by groups who are anti-traditional marriages and families.

He said: “The ministries of gender, women, children and social protection in African countries should roll out social protection policies that empower and build the resilience of families.

“African countries should establish national awards for individuals and organisations that contribute to strengthening families and traditional marriage values”.

He said marriage between a man and woman is sacred, therefore couples should go into it with every sense of responsibility and consciousness of the fact that families and marriages are under attack by different socio-cultural issues.

He said couples have a duty to make their marriage work.

“Stronger nations are built on successful marriages and families and when marriage is recognised by couples as a union of equals, both the husband and wife will commit their God-given talents and resources towards the success of the families”, Nkanang added.

In his remarks, Mr. Victor Eze, who is also of the church, noted the church is working with stakeholders and parents to take the message of strengthening families down to societies.
