Young men and women have been advised to seek opportunities for self-employment rather than gun for paid jobs.

ECWA Good News Church Jimeta, a Yola-based local council of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) gave the advice on Sunday, January 7, stressing that the government and other employers of labour are increasingly unable to provide needed jobs.

The Senior Resident Pastor of the ECWA Good News Church Jimeta, Rev Maxwell Kuri, said in the 2024 annual speech to his congregation that it is becoming more true than before that self-employment is the enduring way to go.

Maxwell Kuri said: “Our boys and indeed even the girls should get engaged in any form of handiwork. Government jobs are not easily available.”

He expressed the view that a vast majority of the rich are not government workers but people who started as small families in businesses such as smallholder farmers, carpenters, tailors, and the like.

He said youths could make it from such beginning if they persevere.

Also in the message, Rev Maxwell Kuri expressed apprehension that attacks on farming communities, drought, and flooding had made Nigeria vulnerable to hunger, advising Nigerians to prepare to prevent or mitigate the effects of hunger.

He said: “We must note that hunger is the most effective weapon of war. Our enemies will continue to destroy our farms and make it impossible for us to farm. Whatever food we have we must secure properly.”

He said the leadership of the Church is worried about poor harvests that occurred as a result of drought, flooding, and destruction of people’s farms.

The reverend said: “We should know that things can and will get worse unless there are steps taken by the government or organisations like the World Food Program (WFP). There will be serious hunger this year 2024. Please if you have grains, manage it properly.”
