Coalition urges APC to shun consensus

The Civil Liberty Organisation for Democratic Change and Responsive Governance (SDCRG) has urged All Progressives Congress (APC) in Surulere Local Government of Lagos State to shun consensus.

It urged stakeholders in the council to ensure primaries are held for the 2023 general elections.

The group Coordinator in Surulere Komolafe Eshilokun, at a media parley, said a consensus does not reflect the internal democracy which the party preaches, and which is also enshrined in its constitution.

Eshilokun said conduct of primaries is the only way the party can achieve its ideals and win the confidence of its members. He frowned at the way candidates were selected in the last local government primaries in Surulere I and II.

Many members, who had bought their declaration of interest and nomination forms at exorbitant fees, were disenfranchised, he said. Those who got tickets got it through a consensus, he added.

Eshilokun reiterated that if the party intends to make inroads in deepening its internal democracy, and sustain its gains, it should adhere to the postulations of Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, and National Leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, for primaries in the two constituencies of Surulere.
