A commercial bus operator has allegedly killed a 400-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State
Obinna Chiaha was killed while the driver, who on top speed, was trying to overtake a trailer.
The accident that occurred near the university gate on the Umuahia/Ikot Ekpene road, caused pandemonium. Students took to the road which serves as a major exit and entrance into Akwa Ibom from Umuahia to protest their colleague’s death.
The students were said to have arrested the car driver and handed him over to the university’s security officials.
The students became violent when they were told that their colleague was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia (FMC).
The body was said to have been taken to a morgue in Umuahia.
“Many students on hearing the sad news of the demise of their colleague took to the street to protest his death. The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Francis Otunta later addressed the students via a telephone conversation through the President of Students Union Government Ononiwu Precious.
“He told the students to remain calm as the university will ensure that the deceased student gets justice. The VC also declared Saturday as Black Saturday in honour of the deceased,” a source said.
