Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has threatened to sanction any monarch or constituted authority, who contributes to communal clashes.
Ahmed gave the warning at the Government House in Ilorin, when he inaugurated a seven-man Judicial Commission of Enquiry into the Illoffa/Odo-Owa clash.
According to him, the state has sustained its reputation as a State of Harmony for years, despite its diverse people and cultures, and he will not allow avoidable communal strife jeopardise the welfare of citizens or tarnish the state’s image.
“It is worrying that the clash led to wanton destruction of life and property, as if it was planned and rehearsed. As a government sworn to protect the welfare and security of citizens, we cannot allow this avoidable loss to continue,” he said.
The governor urged the commission to be objective, and report back within one month.
Ahmed said the government imposed a curfew on the communities to forestall escalation of the crisis and restore law and order.
The Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman D. Kawu, is chairman of the committee.
