A 51-year-old woman, Mrs. Modupe Bankole, was killed, at the weekend, when railings from a storey building collapsed in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The mother of three was relaxing on a mat outside the house when the railings dislodged.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning, Yetunde Dina, who visited the scene, said the government would investigate the incident.
The victim’s husband, Samuel, told reporters that they have been living in the building in the last 12 years.
The widower, a teacher, added that he was preparing his lesson notes when the incident occurred.
“My wife told me she was going to prepare food. When she finished, she took a small mat and a pillow and took them out.
“I was preparing my lesson note so I told her that when I finish, I will join her.
“My last child came back from work and even slept beside his mother. He later left to see a friend. Shortly after, I heard the sound of the collapsed decking.
“I believed that since my wife was not directly under it, she was safe,” he said.
Bankole said his wife died shortly after she was taken to the hospital.
