The Muslim Congress (TMC), Lagos State chapter, has urged Lagosians to embark on clearing drainage to avoid flash floods.
Its Waali (Chairman) Tajuedeen Yuusuf Olusesi said this becomes important in view of the flood warning by Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
The agency, he said, had warned residents of Alapere, Agric, Ajegunle, Alagbole, Isheri, Ketu, Olowora, Owode-Onirin and Mile 2, among others, to be wary of likely floods due to recurring downpours.
Olusesi said: “Having observed how the flood has ravaged parts of the country – Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Delta, Cross River, Kogi and Rivers states – thereby causing damage to life and property while many have been displaced, we call on Lagosians to make adequate preparation to reduce the effects of flooding.
‘’Our hearts go to victims of flash floods. We urge governments, organisations and individuals to reduce the pains of the people…
Although, we have seen steps taken by the state government in clearing drainage channels; we want to encourage the government to do more by simultaneously evacuating the waste removed from the drainage.
‘’We also want to encourage local governments to also be proactive… we implore residents, marketers and business owners to properly dispose of their wastes and clear drainages.
‘’Individuals/organisations should take it as a point of duty to discourage indiscriminate disposal of bottles of soft drinks, and water by sensitising people in their respective communities and report violators to relevant government agencies.”
