To commemorate the Democracy Day, the Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Muibi Alade Folawiyo has organised a four-day Inter-Primary School Competition for the pupils of the LCDA.
According to him, the programme was borne out of the need to bring out the best in the youths by catching them young.
He said: “As you all know, June 12 is celebrated annually to remember Chief MKO Abiola, the great hero that sacrifice his life for democracy and humanity. To mark this memorable day, a novelty match among primary schools was organised to identify with the people-oriented programmes and agenda of the late Abiola. During his lifetime he was a pillar of support for all sporting events. He contributed immensely to the development of our youths by training them in different sports, his football club Abiola Babes was more of a training ground producing soccer gurus”.
He reiterated the administration’s commitment to prioritizing the role of youths in sports development, adding that the Agric youths and social development with the Education department are involved in a lot of programmes to hunt for young talents in schools.
“After assuming office, we invited stakeholders to suggest and adopt measures towards improving our sports and events. The meeting was aimed at engaging our youths and keeping them away from the streets. This will reduce the band wagon effect,” he added.
The competition came to an end with Holy Cross Nursery and Primary School emerging winner with a cash prize of N150,000. St Martyrs Boys Primary School came second with N100,000 while LILG Primary School went home with N50,000 for third place prize.
