The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the Police to produce a suspect, Kolawole Bidemi Adeleye, who was arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad ( SARS ).
Justice Hadiza Rabiu-Shagari made the order based on an application by Adeleye’s lawyer Olanrewaju Ajanaku.
The suspect has been in detention since November 15, last year.
The judge ordered that he produced in court today.
Ajanaku said his client had been undergoing various forms of torture, adding that it has led to the dislocation of Adeleye’s right wrist bone.
He said the suspect now has swollen hands and bruises on his body.
He urged the court to order SARS to produce the suspect to ascertain his health condition and to justify his continued detention without charge.
The applicant is praying the court to declare his detention as illegal and unconstitutional for violating the African Chartered on Human and People’s Rights.
Adeleye asked the court to grant an order of perpetual injunction restraining SARS from further detaining and torturing him.
He demanded N5million damages for his unlawful detention.
The applicant said he was arrested while at work at Durbar Junction in Amuwo Odofin on the allegation that he knew something about the death of one Emmanuel Ubah (alias Onwa).
