Palm Beach Open Cup champion Sayyu Dantata and his SD Farm polo team are set to fly the Nigerian flag as the countdown begins for the World Polo League’s star-studded second season.
The business tycoon and polo super star and his champion team are leading a crowded field of 20 ambitious teams jostling for honours for the first time in the tournament’s 118-year history.
The handicap 22 SD Farms who are the only team mounted by an African Patrons, Sayyu Dantata that are set to make the continent proud during the richest polo series in the world, include David ‘Pelon’ Stirling (10), Peco Polledo (6), Lucas Escobar (4), Sayyu Dantata (2), and Sayyu Dantata Jr. (1) as a substitute.
Proudly hosting the Gauntlet of Polo since its debut in 2019, the United States Polo Association, USPA and the International Polo Club Palm Beach recently announced teams that would compete for the titles in the Gauntlet champion this year.
According to the organizers, three major cups, starting with the C.V. Whitney Cup are up for grabs. It will continue with the USPA Gold Cup® from March 1-27 and will conclude with the illustrious U.S. Open Polo Championship between March 29 and April 24, 2022.
Apart from being the proud Gauntlet Champion, winners and runners-up are guaranteed the richest cash reward yet in the history of polo. Any team that wins all three tournaments will smile home with $200,000 in prize money.
The winners for the C.V. Whitney Cup and the USPA Gold Cup will be presented $50,000 per tournament, and the winner of the U.S. Open Polo Championship awarded $100,000.
In addition, the USPA and the sponsors will once again donate to both the winner and runner up of all three tournaments to be given to the polo charity of their choice, continuing the brand’s support of the polo community and the sport.
In 2019, Sayyu Dantata and his SD Farmers made polo history in the USA becoming the first team mounted by an African patron to win the prestigious World Polo League Palm Beach Open title.
SD Farms polo team and Audi polo team met in The World Polo League Palm Beach Open final at Grand Champions Polo Club, USA, to decide the league champion.
Both SD Farms and Audi entered The World Polo League Palm Beach Open final undefeated with crowds gathering on the sidelines to witness a clash of the titans between these two powerhouse teams with a 10 goal player on each team.
SD Farms parading Sayyu Dantata, 2, Santi Torres, 6, Guillermo Terrera, 8, Adolfo Cambiaso, 10) jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two chukkas against Audi (Marc Ganzi, 2, NicRoldan, 8, Pablo MacDonough, 10, Kris Kampsen, 6) and went on to win, 11-6.
The World Polo League has attracted a large international field of players from all corners of the world including Nigeria, USA, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, and Uruguay.
