DHQ to AI: stop cooking reports against military

THE Defence Headquarters yesterday called on Amnesty International (AI) to “stop cooking reports against the military” since it is capable of demoralising the entire military system.

It drew the attention of the public to attempts by the group to release a false report on fictitious rape incidents in IDP camps in the Northeast.

Acting Director of Defence Information Brig.-Gen. John Agim, in a statement issued in Abuja, said Amnesty International should partner with security agencies to bring an end to insurgency rather than engaged in falsehood and habits that paint the military in bad light.

But official duties at the Abuja office of AI was temporarily halted yesterday, as over 1,000 protesters stormed the office to protest what they described as plot to destabilise the country.

The protesters raised the alarm that Amnesty plans to release a report which will attempt to portray the government troops and Civilian JTF fighting the Boko Haram terrorists in the north east, of routinely detain, rape, starve and kill women as well as minors.

National Convener of the Civil Rights Groups, organiser of the protest, Comrade Danesi Momoh, described the proposed report as false and maliciously targeted at destabilising Nigeria.
