Dock worker to face trial July 3

•For alleged murder of wife

Justice Josephine Oyefeso, of an Ikeja High Court, Lagos, has fixed July 3 for the the trial of Lekan Shonde, two years after he allegedly beat his wife, Ronke, to death.

The judge fixed the date after the matter came up for mention.

She ordered the prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Kofoworola Tunji-Carrena, to open her case against the defendant on the next adjourned date.

Shonde, 51, was arraigned at the court on October 24, last year, on a one-count charge of murder.

He pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution team, led by Mrs. Tunji-Carrena, alleged that Shonde committed the offence at 8:30 pm on May 5, 2016, at his home, 3, Tiemo Close, Egbeda, Lagos.

According to the charge, Shonde was involved in an altercation with Ronke, which led to her death. The prosecution alleged the accused locked up the home and fled, leaving the body in the living room.

It was discovered by neighbours, who heard the cries of the two children, who tried to “wake up their mother.”

After a manhunt, Shonde allegedly surrendered to the police five days after the incident.
