Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, was involved in another drama on Thursday when he arrested an officer of the Federal Road Safety (FRSC) in Ikere Ekiti for driving against traffic.
Fayose personally arrested the FRSC officer while on his way to the flag off of dualization of the Ado-Ikere-Ondo State boundary road and commissioning of some projects in Ikere town as part of activities to mark the first anniversary of his administration.
The officer whose name was given as Adeola Alabi left the bad portion of the road for the other lane and drove against traffic to avoid potholes and reconnect the lane he was before.
The incident which happened at Sawmill area of Ikere resulted in traffic snarl as the residents trooped out to watch the drama.
Alabi’s action was said to have infuriated Fayose who ordered security operatives in his convoy to ensure the road safety officer was apprehended.
After he was arrested, Alabi prostrated before Fayose begging the governor to have mercy on him. The governor did not listen to his pleas maintaining that the law must take its course.
Fayose ordered that the Peugeot 505 Saloon car driven by Alabi should be seized and taken to the premises of the Ekiti State Traffic Management Agency (EKSTMA).
The culprit is expected to cough out N50,000 as fine for driving against traffic otherwise called “one way.”
The N50,000 fine was imposed by the governor about two months ago to curb the impunity of commercial and private drivers fond of driving against traffic.
Meanwhile, Fayose has said paucity of funds will not stop him from embarking on projects that will lead to the development of the state, as he has to reciprocate the support of the people all the time.
Speaking in Ikere-Ekiti while flagging off the extension of the dualisation of the Ado-Ikere Road, the governor said the people of the town and the state in general stood by him in his trying moments.
The governor said he was ready to make personal sacrifices by forfeiting some perks of office to ensure that the welfare of the people and the progress of the state were given priority.
“In the last one year, you stood by me, you supported me, you encouraged me, you prayed for me. I promise I will continue to serve you. We are undaunted by the poor finances of the state. That won’t stop our march to greatness.
The dual carriage way was started by me and where I left it about 10 years ago is where it has been. I will continue to support Ikere people, they are supportive of my political aspirations and I cannot underestimate them.
“During the last election, you voted massively for me. We are going to ensure that the project does not suffer any delay. The manner and commitment with which we worked on and completed the Elegberun Market is a pointer to our determination to serve you,” he said.
