Drycleaner arraigned for stealing friend’s car, N3.7m

The Zone II Police Command, Lagos, on Monday arraigned a drycleaner, Bose Bamidele, who allegedly defrauded her friend of N3.7million, a sports car and a laptop, before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court.

Bamidele, 26, of Olufemi Street, off Ogunlana Drive Surulere, Lagos, is standing trial before Mrs B. O. Olusanya on two- count charge of obtaining under false pretence and stealing.

Prosecuting police officer, Sgt. Cyriacus Osuji, said the offences contravened Sections 287(5) (B) and 13(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and punishable under same.

According to the police, Bamidele, from Ikole, Ekiti State, committed the offences in the Anthony area of Lagos State sometime in 2016.

Osuji said she fraudulently obtained the sum of N3.7 million from her friend, Abimbola Ayanwale, by presenting herself as a United States-based suitor, Dapo Awosika.

The defendant allegedly manipulated the voice setting of her phone and made telephone calls and Whatsapp chats, pretending to be different persons in order to defraud Abimbola.

Osuji said: “The defendant obtained N3.7 million from the complainant under the guise that she was Dapo Awosika and the defendant had the knowledge that the said Awosika does not exist.”

“The defendant also allegedly obtained the complainant’s Toyota Corolla car worth N1.5 million and one HP Laptop worth N700, 000 under false pretence.

“The cash and items were all valued at N5.9 million.

Bamidele pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Gbenga-Olusanya granted her bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

The case continues on March 26.
