Rivers United head coach, Stanley Eguma, has praised the performance of the newly signed players in their 3-0 thumping of Watanga FC of Liberia in the CAF Champions League, preliminary round, first leg tie played in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Kenechukwu Agu and Bolaji Sakin started the game among the new players while more came on in the second half of the game as the Pride of Rivers cruised to a 3-0 win .
“The new players lived up to expectations,” Eguma said after the game.“ I give them kudos and I know that we are yet to see their best.
“This is just their first game and they have given us hope that there is something better in the future.”
Eguma further said that some of the players that picked up injuries in the game and in their previous friendly games, would be examined by the team medicals with a view to considering their availability for the weekend’s return leg tie in Monrovia.
“It depends on the state of the injured players. We are going to consult our medical team for them to assess the level of the injuries to know if the players are going to come back within a short period of time before our trip to Monrovia,” he continued.
“The zeal with which the players used in approaching the game in the first half was commendable. They swung into business and they showed that they were out for the tournament. They put on such spirited effort and I know they will go far in the competition.”
