Ekiti monarch seeks review of chieftaincy  laws

Monarch

The Obaleo of Erinmope Ekiti in Moba Local Government, Sunday Aniyi, has called for a review of the state chieftaincy law and a declaration to end litigation after selection of a monarch.

Oba Aniyi lamented that Ekiti was the most rancorous in obaship selection tussle in Southwest.

The monarch spoke during his coronation and launching of N400 million fund for establishment of Amoyinmade Centre for Women and Youth Development.

At the event, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, the governor’s wife, was conferred with the title of Yeye Oba of Erinmope-Ekiti.

He said: “I think something  needs to be done to the Ekiti State Chieftaincy Law and declaration. The attempt to impose uniformity in the selection process and unnecessary gratification of bad losers in the system is making Ekiti the most rancorous in obaship selection in Yorubaland.

“…there is hardly any oba that doesn’t get challenged in court, no matter how transparent the selection process… A law needs to be promulgated to end the act of obtaining frivolous restraining injunction meant to stampede the selection process or coronation…”

Dignitaries at the event are Governor Kayode Fayemi; governor-elect Biodun Oyebanji ; wife of Osun State Governor Kafayat Oyetola; and Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, among others.

Oba Aniyi noted that there was need to reform the local government system to ensure  traditional rulers played more active roles in the councils.

The Ooni, who congratulated the ruler, urged him to galvanise his people towards the socio-economic development of the community.
