Enugu APC chieftain arraigned for ‘perjury’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, Hyacinth Nsude has been arraigned before an Enugu Chief Magistrate Court for alleged perjury against the party.

Nsude was arrested on Wednesday following a petition by two persons who claimed to be acting on the party’s behalf.

The chieftain led some party members to the High Court to challenge the decision of the state government to constitute caretaker committees for the local government areas, instead of conducting elections following the expiration of the last tenure on January 5.

Nsude was arraigned on a one-count charge of perjury. He, however, pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer I.K Ozor argued that the charge be dismissed as the supposed complainant was not in court and was not represented by anybody.

He also asked the court to grant the defendant bail, which it obliged.

The court ordered that APC appear in court on the next adjourned date to indicate whether it was aware of the complaint for which Nsude was being prosecuted.

Chief Magistrate Nnena Madu adjourned the matter till March 11 for further hearing.
