Erudite scholar Makinde dies at 80

A retired Professor of Philosophy from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and The Nation Editorial Board member, Prof. Moses Akin Makinde, is dead.

Makinde died yesterday morning after a protracted illness. He was 80. He was born in Ado-Ekiti.

He bagged a Bachelor in Philosophy with first class honours from the Universit of Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1969 and Master of Arts in Philosophy, University Western Ontario, London in 1970.  The author of ‘Awo as a Philosopher’ held the Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science from the University of Toronto. He was a Fulbright visiting professor in the U.S. between 1983 and 1984.  The late Makinde also authored ‘African Philosophy, Culture, and Traditional Medicine’. He was at various times Special teaching fellow, University Western Ontario, London, 1969-1970; junior fellow, Massey College University of Toronto, 1970-1973; lecturer in philosophy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ilfe, Nigeria, 1974-1989; acting. head of philosophy department, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ilfe, 1982-1989; professor head of philosophy department, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, 1989-1995; and Editorial Consultant, Nigerian Journal of Philosophy, University of Lagos.
