Ex-union chief urges monitoring of gas plants

The ex-President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Chief Basil Ogbuanu, yesterday urged the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to check indiscriminate location of gas plants.

He spoke at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Benin City, Edo State.

Ogbuanu said indiscriminate location of gas plants without recourse to safety of the environment and the people was dangerous.

He said it was common to see gas plants in densely populated areas in cities.

“We must continue with our advocacy and work with DPR on this issue.

“DPR should go round because a lot of things are going wrong in this industry, especially the siting of plants in streets.

“We are not totally against it, but we are against indiscriminate positioning of the facilities.

“If you go to some places and see the way gas facilities are displayed, you will weep for this country because it is a time bomb waiting to explode.”

Ogbuanu enjoined DPR to ensure licences were not given to applicants wishing to do the business.

He advised Nigerians to embrace domestic gas, as it is not only healthier, but more economical.
