Fed Govt urges Nigerians to improve animal care

The Federal government has called on Nigerians to continue to strive in routine care for animals to keep the ecosystem stable. It also noted the importance of good animal husbandry practices in climate change discourse globally.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mustapha Baba Shehuri, stated this in Abuja at the commemoration of the World Animal Day with the theme: “Good Animal Husbandry is Climate Smart”.

Speaking on the theme, Shehuri noted that climate smart animal agriculture strategies which include sustainable livestock production systems will address environment issues while ensuring improved productivity, enhanced resilience and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

He noted that it also promotes food and nutritional security with emphasis on safe food to meet Sustainable Development Goals.

“The commemoration of the World Animal Day reminds all to examine the current animal husbandry practices in relation to the environment in the ever-changing climate situations with the view to adapting and mitigating its effects for increased profits in livestock businesses.

“The days offer an opportunity to celebrate and embrace all animals including farm and non-farm animals and their unique concerns and care requirements in every Country”, Shehuri stated.

In his remarks, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Ernest Umakhihe noted that climate smart agriculture enhances resilience to changing climate.

“Climate smart agriculture will contribute to the growth and development of the sector as we strive for productivity, profitability of production and the associated businesses.”
