Five renamed national buildings

President Bola Tinubu has renamed the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, after Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.

Tinubu announced this in a letter he wrote to celebrate the iconic figure in commemoration of his 90th birthday.

Many other national buildings have been renamed.

Here are five national buildings that have been renamed:

1. Teslim Balogun Stadium: Its original name was Surulere National Stadium and changed in 2004, in honor of Teslim Balogun, a renowned footballer and coach.

2. Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos: The airport had been known simply as the Lagos International Airport. It was however, re-named for the late Nigerian Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed, who died in 1976.

3. Obafemi Awolowo University: Formerly known as University was renamed following the demise of one of the foremost Nigerian politicians of the old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the name “University of Ife” was changed to “Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife” in 1987.

4. National Theatre, Lagos: The National Theatre situated at Iganmu, Lagos has been renamed after playwright and poet, Wole Soyinka.

5. Federal University, Oye-Ekiti: The name of the federal institution was changed from Federal University, Oye-Ekiti to Adeyinka Adebayo University by the Buhari administration in 2017 in honor of Major General Adeyinka Adebayo.
