Four girls drown in Jigawa pond

Four teenage girls who tried to swim in a pond in Sakwaya village, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, have drowned.

Police spokesman Abdu Jinjiri confirmed this yesterday. He gave their names as Sumayya Gadi (7); Zuwaira Abdulhamidu (12); Gaji Saidu (12) and Ummi Saidu (11).

According to Jinjiri, the deceased were on their way to the neighbouring Farantawa village in Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State to fetch firewood when they decided to swim.

Their relatives reported the incident about 1.30pm on Saturday after their bodies were recovered.

The deceased were confirmed dead at a nearby hospital and they have been buried according to Islamic rites.
