Free breast cancer screening for women

The immediate past Executive Secretary of Odi-Olowo/ Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Rasaq Ajala has organised a two-day free breast cancer screening for women in the council.

Ajala, while flagging off the two-day exercise on Tuesday in Idi-Oro, said breast cancer was one of the deadly diseases ravaging women.

He said no fewer than 100,000 people succumb to the scourge of cancer yearly in Nigeria which according to him could have been reduced if people screened regularly to detect early growth of cancerous cells in the body.

The former council boss decried the inadequate cancer treatment facilities in the country, stressing that just nine cancer treatment centres in the country cannot cater for the population of over 170milliom people’.

Early detection through screening, he said, remained the only viable option of winning the war against cancer.

Ajala disclosed that he embarked on the breast cancer screening exercise to create awareness among the people of the dangers of the terminal disease which according to him many were ignorant about.

Dr Seyi Awolope, a representative of the RedCare, a health service firm which handled screening exercise hailed Ajala for bringing the screening and enlightenment to women at the grassroots.
