From Gadarenes to Decapolis

  • By Henry O. Adelegan

There is nothing more profound than transitioning from the depths of despair to the heights of divine transformation. Nothing is as fulfilling as moving from a place of struggle to a position of victory, and nothing is as awe-inspiring as the restoration of what was once lost, stolen, or denied. David, who experienced such a dramatic turnaround—from a shepherd in the wilderness to a king in the palace—testified: “When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed.” (Psalm 126:1). As we embark on this sacred journey of Lent, my prayer for you is that God will visit you and all that concerns you. May He grant you testimonies beyond human comprehension—miracles that eyes have not seen, wonders that ears have not heard, and breakthroughs yet to enter the hearts of men (1 Corinthians 2:9), in the name of Jesus Christ.

Kindly take note dear beloved in Christ that it is in God’s nature to uplift the weary: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” (Isaiah 40:29). In His divine wisdom, “God chooses the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; He chooses the weak things to shame the strong.” (1 Corinthians 1:27). There is no impossibility with God (Matthew 19:26). As the owner of “the cattle on a thousand hills” (Psalm 50:10), He has the power to rewrite destinies in ways that defy human logic and consequently astound all.

Throughout Scripture, we see examples of God lifting the downtrodden. Mordecai, a mere gatekeeper in the morning (Esther 2:21) became the occupant of a royal mansion by evening (Esther 8:2). Naaman, a leper who lived in social exile, was miraculously healed and returned to Syria in honor (2 Kings 5:1-14). Joseph, once a prisoner, rose to power in Egypt and was welcomed as a savior of the land. Esther, a humble Jewish girl, became a queen. The same God who changed their stories is able to, and shall, transform your life this Lenten season in the name of Jesus.

The story of the man from Gadarenes is a powerful testimony of divine intervention and capacity to transit  from darkness to light. This man was banished to the graveyards, living among the dead—forgotten, hopeless, and bound by demonic oppression. Yet, Jesus crossed the stormy waters just for him. Despite the devil’s attempt to hinder Christ’s journey with a fierce windstorm (Mark 4:37), Jesus arrived, rebuked the unclean spirits, and set the man free. In a moment, the once-possessed man transitioned from a life of bondage to becoming an evangelist in Decapolis, a region of ten cities (Mark 5:20).

Dear beloved, no matter what you are going through, God is able to change your story for His glory, as this is your season of transformation. Are you trusting Him for a breakthrough in your marriage, career, health, or spiritual life? Are you longing for fruitfulness and fulfillment? Just as Jesus moved the man from Gadarenes to Decapolis, He can transition you from your place of struggle to your place of purpose.

This Lent, surrender your life to Him. Invite Jesus into your heart, ask for His forgiveness, and seek His grace to walk in His will. He has done it before, and He will do it again. Do not lose hope. Arise and shine, for your light has come! Though darkness may cover the earth and gross darkness the people, the glory of the Lord shall rise upon you (Isaiah 60:1-2). Your transformation will not only bring joy to your life but will also lead others to Christ.

Prayer: Lord, I surrender to You. Pay attention to my plight and move me from my Gadarenes to my Decapolis. Let this season of Lent mark the beginning of my divine transformation, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
