Workers of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) disrupted academic activities at the institution on Monday to protest the disengagement of 26 workers by the Governing Council.
A statement signed by Registrar/ Secretary to the council, Mr Matthew Ayoola, noted that the workers were sacked for “stealing university property, insubordination, wilful disobedience to lawful instructions, absconding from assigned duty posts, sabotage and other forms of gross misconduct, prejudicial to good governance and peace of the University”.
The decision was taken at thes 90th Statutory Meeting of the council held last Thursday, during which the Council considered reports on the university.
The protest was carried out by alleged members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), who barricaded the Isolu-Alabata Road, leading to the university with bonfires to express their dissatisfaction with the sack.
However, Ayoola argued that all affected workers were given fair hearing to respond to the queries against them before sanctions were applied.
Members of other unions in the university (the Academic Staff Union of Universites and the National Assocation of Academic Technologists) did not join the protest.
