Govt should sustain campaign against irregular migration

A migration expert and resource person at the European Union-International Organisation for Migration (EU-IOM) reintegration training in Nigeria, Osita Osemene, has urged the Federal Government to sustain the tempo of campaigns against irregular migration.

According to Osemene, this would bring the problem under control.

He spoke against the backdrop of recent reports that no fewer than 50 Nigerians were rescued in the Mediterranean Sea, en route Italy.

They were among 110 migrants, comprising 18 women and one child, who were intercepted and rescued by the Libyan coastguard and Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Osemene, who was shocked at the development, added: “It is regrettable that despite efforts by the government, international bodies and local agencies to curb irregular migration, Nigerians are still taking the risk.”
