The Development Research and Projects Centre (DRPC), a Kano-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), recently organised a forum to commemorate the International Day of the Girl-Child and Teachers’ Day. The forum provided the platform to celebrate girls and teachers who had been empowered to provide quality education service delivery in their states.

The girls, who were secondary school leavers, were trained by dRPC to run early child development centres in low-income communities in Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto and others. The teachers were also trained to improve the English language competencies of 100 primary three English teachers in the area of transition from Hausa to English languages in 10 government primary schools in Kano State.

The dRPC hosted the beneficiaries at the American Space, Kano State Library for an experience-sharing session.

Dr Umar Yahaya and Mallam Yahaya Muhd Durumin Iya of the Saadatu Rimi College of Education facilitated the experience-sharing session for the teachers who gave testimonies of their increased capacity, new knowledge and skills to support their pupils to make a smooth transition from Hausa to the English language.

Mallam Sefuwan Haruna, Assistant headteacher of Garo Science and Mathematics Primary School said some teachers also needed to learn the rudiments of English because of their poor mastery of the language.
