Group clamours for APC deputy governorship slot

A POLITICAL group in Ondo State, the Sunshine Progressive League (SPL), has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to consider the southern senatorial district for deputy governor slot in the November 26 governorship polls.

Its coordinator, Gbenga Akinfolarin, made this call while speaking to reporters in Akure, the state capital, over the weekend.

Akinfolarin said there was the need for the opposition party to put its house in order to enable it win the governorship election.

The group also expressed concern over the neglect of the southern senatorial district by the Governor Olusegun Mimiko administration

It lamented that Mimiko had reneged on his promise to turn Ore in Odigbo Local Government to an economic hub.

Akinfolarin added that the voting strength of the southern district, especially Odigbo Local Government with over 120,000 registered voters, where the APC dictates the political activities of the area, must be prioritised.

He reminded the APC stakeholders to consider the overwhelming support the people of the area gave Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) during the 2012 governorship election as the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate.

This, the group believed, could translate to victory and as such, Ondo South should be considered for the slot.

Appreciating the efforts of party leaders in mobilising for victory, Akinfolarin acknowledged the support of the Chief Imam of Odigbo kingdom, Alhaji Olurisimi Ismaila, who contested for the deputy governorship position in the 2012.

The group noted that if the APC chieftain is considered for the deputy governorship slot, the party would enjoy overwhelming support from the Muslim community and non-indigenes living in the local government.

Akinfolarin described the Chief Imam as a grassroots mobiliser, a loyal party man, who respects the APC hierarchy and a social crusader.
