The Police Command in Cross River State yesterday confirmed that gunmen attacked travellers on Ikom-Calabar Highway, abducting about nine of them.

The incident reportedly took place on Monday evening.

Commissioner of Police Sule Balarabe said he saw a short video of the attack on social media and immediately took action.

He said, “When I saw the video I immediately dispatched tactical teams including the Anti Kidnapping Squad among others to the area. The Nigeria Army also joined in the search and rescue operation.

“We are doing our best at the moment, and I can assure you it will be adequately handled,” CP Balarabe said.

In the video, a driver reportedly said, “I was in front going to Ikom, and another driver was coming from Calabar. Before you knew it, we saw herdsmen come out from the bush and started shooting at us.

“They shot one of my tyres, I jumped out of the car, they took all my six passengers with them.”

The second driver said three of his passengers were abducted by the assailants armed with guns and machetes.
