Gunmen attack Enugu INEC officials, destroy registration machines

The Independent National Electoral Commission yesterday said gunmen attacked its officials in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.

INEC chairman, Information, Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, who confirmed the development in a statement, said one of the commission’s staff members was injured and hospitalised.

Okoye said the officials were attacked while on the Continuous Voter Registration exercise at a community Primary School Umuopu in Umuozzi Ward 19.

“The gunmen fired intermittently into the air to disperse people being registered and registration officials. In the ensuing stampede, one of our staff members sustained injuries and is receiving treatment in a hospital,” the statement read.

“Two voter registration machines and personal items of the official such as mobile phones were lost.

“Consequently, Ward level registration of voters in Igboeze North is hereby suspended”.

Okoye said the Commission has reported the incident to police authorities in the state.
