Gunmen attack LP candidate Lasun’s residence

Former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun, yesterday said gunmen invaded his Osun State residence on Monday.

In a tweet, the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate said the armed men shot randomly at his house.

“Just in: gun men in uniforms are presently in my residence shooting sporadically,” he wrote.

In another tweet about five hours later, Lasun stated: “And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you to imprison you, or to kill you, or to expel you (from your home, Makkah); they were plotting and Allah too was plotting, and Allah is the best of plotters. Quran 8 verse 30.”

Lasun told reporters that gunmen attacked his residence at about 1 a.m.

He said the attack lasted for 20 minutes and that his security details were able to repel the assailants without recording any casualties.

“At about 1 a.m., my house was attacked; the evidence is very prominent, my building is riddled with bullets.

“In the last three governorship debates we have had, I have never attacked anybody on how to govern Osun.

“Unfortunately, this attack, to my surprise lasted for about 20 minutes. We have evidence of those that actually carried out the attack.

“The police have been to my house to assess the situation and the evidence gathered had been handed over to the police,’’ he said.

The state police command spokesman, Yemisi Opalola, said an unspecified number of gunmen attacked the residence in the early hours of Monday.

She said the assailants shot at Lasun’s building, but could not gain access before security operatives attached to the candidate chased them away.

She added that the attack was reported at the Ilobu Police Station and the Divisional Police Officer was at the scene of the attack to assess the situation.

The Osun State Government, in a statement by Chief Press Secretary Ismail Omipidan, urged the police to investigate the attack.

Group adopts candidate

Also yesterday, a cultural group, Yoruba Study Group, adopted Lasun as its preferred candidate.

Its president, Comrade Williams Adeosun, spoke with reporters after the group’s meeting at the Testing Ground, Osogbo.

He said: “Lasun is very vibrant, experienced and influential. He is ready to bring his acumen to develop Osun.

“He spoke intelligently during the debate. We are solidly behind him and we are committed and confident that he will win the forthcoming election.

“We have been mobilising support for him. He will emerge because some of our members are going from house to house to educate voters on the need to elect a good candidate for Osun.”

The group decried the attack on Lasun’s residence, saying no intimidation will make the supporters back down.

“We must all reject inducement of any kind during the electioneering period,” the group said.
