Gunmen have killed two security men at St Joseph’s Cathedral Church, in Ekwulobia, Aguata local government area of Anambra State.

The Nation learnt that the security personnel were gunned down for attending a prayer session at the church during Monday sit-at-home allegedly ordered by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed the attack but said one person was killed.

He said the hoodlums invaded the area at about 10.30pm on Monday night, shooting rapidly on the road close to Aguata council secretariat.

Tochukwu said no arrest had been made, adding that the command had deployed more men to the area.

He said investigations were on, adding that the command would not relent in making sure the perpetrators were apprehended and brought to book.

An eyewitness, who spoke with The Nation, said the police were economical with the truth on casualty figure.

The source said the hoodlums ran riot in the area without any challenge.

Tension has heightened in the state since Thursday last week.

Some suspected members of IPOB warned on Sunday that people should not come out on Monday for any prayer session called by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

But the national publicity secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, said such directives did not come from the organisation.
