Hamzat, dons, others seek value change

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Prof. Afis Oladosu of the University of Ibadan and Prof. Tajudeen Olalekan Yusuf of the University of Lagos, have called for return of value in the country.

The trio spoke during the Annual Public Lecture organised by The Muslim Congress (TMC), Lagos State chapter at the main auditorium of University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka.

Hamzat, who was represented by Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Religion (Islam), Alhaji Ahmed Jebe, stressed the effect of the paradigm shift and loss of values.

He emphasised the need to go back to the basics.

“We’ve lost our values and there is a need for us to salvage our society. We need to go back to the basics. That is how we can save Nigeria,” he said

Prof Oladosu said without values, nations cannot move forward, adding that civilization is nothing without values.”

He urged Muslims to fear Allah and always pattern their lifestyles in accordance with prophetic traditions.

Prof. Yusuf urged parents to be dutiful in upbringing their wards.

According to him, the society is a reflection individual homes.

“We must uphold those values in our homes and entrench them in our children. Let’s inculcate accountability, integrity and honesty in them,” he said.

A Superintendent of Police (SP), Raji Muhammad Jamiu, cautioned Muslims against things that could jeopardize their spiritual and eternal affairs.

He advised Muslim lawyers to use their practice to eliminate crimes, rather than being allies of criminals.

TMC Amir Alhaji AbdulWasi’i Bangbala said there is a great need to restore the lost value that once held the country together as a nation.

He said: “Over the years, we discovered that the value of individuals and the nation at large keeps deteriorating and as Muslims, we have a role to play. It is pertinent that as the best community, we must restore the lost values,” he said.
