‘Homeless’ man steals cop’s money, phone

A 50-year-old unemployed man, Okeowo Bukola, on Tuesday admitted before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, that he and two other men assaulted a policeman and stole his phone and cash worth N25,000.

Bukola, from Ogun State, was arraigned before Mrs. A. O. J. Adepeju by the police from Lion Building Division, Obalende, Lagos, on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and assault.

Prosecuting Sergeant Nicholas Akpene told the court that Bukola and others at large committed the offences on May 14 at about 5:45am on Marina Expressway, Lagos Island.

He alleged that they assaulted Mr. Joshua Ogwo, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Central Criminal Registry Force C.I.D Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

“The defendant and the two others swooped on the officer and punched him all over his body, before dispossessing him of N10,000 and a Samsung Galaxy phone with two SIM cards, valued at N15,000.

“The total sum of the items stolen was N25,000, property of ASP Ogwe,” the prosecutor said.

Akpene said the offences contravened Sections 173, 285(1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Nation learnt that after the alleged attack, the assailants took off with the items, while the victim contacted a police patrol vehicle along the expressway.
