Productivity can be enhanced in workplace if entitlement mentality is stamped out, stakeholders have said.
The need to address negative effects of entitlement mentality in workplace dominated conversations at the maiden Africa HR Roundtable in Lagos.
A panel session with human resource experts, including Shola Oshogwemoh, Tunde Olagunju and Joshua Popoola, said having clear structures on performance and responsibilities, regular reorientation of employees, improved leadership style, among others, would curb the situation.
Olagunju said ‘the society has, most times, conditioned people to develop an entitlement mentality and until we correct this, things might not work’.
He urged companies to be clear on organisational goals and expectations, have a non-selective reward system, and a leadership style that reflects integrity.
Oshogwemoh stressed that entitlement mentality breeds negativity, and advocated regular training, knowledge sharing sessions, as well as instant correction of affected employee to curb the menace.

Managing Director of Greensage Business Consult, organisers of the roundtables, Efe Ihegie, noted that human resources management is considered one of the most important elements of any organisation.
“Where all other resources are in place, without the right human resources, the organisation’s chances of success are slim.
“So this roundtable was put together to identify the entitlement syndrome as one big challenge in human resources, and how it affects our dear continent.
“We also believe that outcomes from this roundtable will help practitioners better manage the syndrome towards eliminating it from our workplaces,” she said.
