ICPC launches anti-graft drive in Bayelsa FMC

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) now has an Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU).

It was recently inaugurated by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

The desire by the commission to ensure all establishments of the Federal Government conform with the rules of engagements in procurements of equipment, handling financial matters and transacting other businesses gave birth to ACTU in FMC.

The unit was inaugurated by the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Abubakar, who was represented by the Commissioner in charge of Bayelsa and Rivers states, Mr Alex Chukwurah. Launching the unit, Abubakar, whose speech was read by Chukwurah, said being an institution of medicare administration, FMC is saddled with the duty of providing quality healthcare to the people of Bayelsa and beyond.

He said it became imperative to strengthen the synergy between the centre and the commission. Therefore, he said there was need to reinvigorate the corruption prevention mechanism of ICPC to check activities of FMC.

According to him, the initiative will ensure due process, accountability and transparency in the centre.

The ICPC boss described the ACTU as one of the initiatives of the commission with mandates to combat corrupt practices and entrench transparency in the public service.

He said the unit was an institutional ethics and anti-corruption instrument under the commission’s preventive mandate established in collaboration with the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.
