‘It’s Ijebu-Remo’s turn to govern Ogun’

•Aspirant: it’s unfair Yewa hasn’t produced governor

A socio-cultural group, Ijebu and Remo Congress (IRC), has said the Ijebu-Remo extraction of Ogun State should produce the next governor in the 2019 elelction.

The group premised its assertion on what it called the well-known rotation formula.

It pledged to ensure that nobody robs the area of the right.

IRC, which was operating previously as Ijebu People Agenda (distinct from The Ijebu Agenda), said the decision of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Ibikunle Amosun to zone the governorship ticket to Ogun West runs contrary to the subsisting rotational arrangement between the old Ijebu and Egba provinces.

The group said its resolve to ensure that an Ijebu/Remo son or daughter occupies the governorship seat is “non-negotiable”.

These were among IRC’s submissions in a communique it issued at the end of its meeting in Ijebu-Ode on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the nine local government areas in the old Ijebu Province.

The communique signed by IRC’s Steering Committee Chairman Nuberu Femi and its Public Relations Officer (PRO) Kamal Osunfowora said any candidate who would represent the Ijebu and the Remo in the governorship election must have some demonstrable virtues.

It reads: “The decision of Ogun APC and Governor Ibikunle Amosun to zone the governorship ticket to Ogun West, despite the fact that it runs contrary to the subsisting arrangement in Ogun State, which rotates the governor seat between the old Ijebu and Egba provinces, is unfavourable to our stated goal.

“In view of (third) reason above, we opine strongly that any candidate who will represent the Ijebu and Remo people in the looming governorship contest must have demonstrable capacity to weather the storm ahead in terms of structure across the state, finance, manifest grit and political independence that is in alignment with the justifiable aspiration of Ijebu and Remo people of old Ijebu Province…”
