Dressed in black outfits, crowd of journalists, on Tuesday protested the gruesome murder of their colleague and employee of the Bayelsa State-owned radio station, Glory FM 97.1, Mr. Famous Giobaro.
Giobaro, a desk editor with the station, who hailed from Otuedo community in Ogbia local government area of the state, was killed in the early hours of Easter Sunday by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
The mourners including all employees of Bayelsa Radio marched in procession from the premises of the radio station along Azikoro Road to some media houses, to register their anger.
They trekked and displayed placards with inscriptions such as, “We are mourning,” “Government should ensure adequate security in Bayelsa,” “Why kill journalist” and “Journalist is your friend, stop killing journalists.”
The protesters led by the Director of News and Current Affairs of Bayelsa Radio, Mrs. Timiebi Ebiye, urged the state police command to fish out the killers of Giobaro.
Ebiye, who described the late journalist as his son, said they were angry at the killing of the broadcaster.
She said the victim lived in fear of assassination and shared his foreboding with his neighbours before he was eventually killed.
She said the fears he expressed on the eve of his murder prompted his family to send two of their sons to keep him company.
Narrating the incident, he said: “On the Sunday morning about 5.08 a.m. killers went to his house, cut his burglary proof in the kitchen window and went to his room and he got to know they were there.
“Two boys were sleeping with him that night. According to the information we gathered, this young man was threatened and he was living without peace. So, a neighbour asked his children to come and sleep with him.
“They were pushing the door, obstructing the killers not to enter. The killers shot through the door and the bullets got to him. He fell down. So the two boys were helpless and they ran away. The killers succeeded in entering the house and ended his life.”
