Kano CP decries rising spate of rape

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Rabiu Yusuf, yesterday raised an alarm over the rising spate of rape and called for the collaboration of community leaders and eminent personalities in the state to check the menace.

Yusuf, who spoke during the quarterly meeting with Eminent Personalities Forum in the state, comprising traditional rulers, religious leaders, retired security chiefs and opinion leaders drawn from the 44 local government areas in the state, also lamented the high rate of sodomism and drug abuse among youths.

Yusuf also charged parents to monitor the activities of their children and desist from sending them on errands at odd hours.

“This issue of rape has become a major challenge to the society. This thing happen everyday and police cannot be everywhere. This is where the role of eminent personalities comes in. You have to take this message to the people, enlighten them and educate them on the inherent dangers of the menace.

“As parents, we have to monitor the movement of our children because they are vulnerable and can be easily deceived by some unscrupulous elements who may want to take advantage of them and dehumanise them, especially the young girls.

He said the Command in the last few months re-strategised in its fight against cattle rustling and kidnapping, which led to success particularly in Kano North areas like Tudun Wada, Sumaila, Doguwa and Rano.

Yusuf said the command summoned the eminent persons to receive briefing on how they have fared in contributing their quota towards diligent policing of the state.

In his remark, AIG Bashir Albasu (rtd) decried the spate of rape cases in the state and frowned at the increasing surge in use of dangerous and hard drugs and peddling amongst youths in the state.

Also speaking, Eze Ndigbo in Kano, His Royal Highness, Igwe Boniface Ibekwe, commended the Commissioner of Police for bringing down the wave of crime in the state and urged the Forum to put in more efforts in its task of helping the Command in the area of community policing.
