A high court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, yesterday sentenced to death the killer of a female jobseeker, Iniubong Umoren.

Iniubong was reportedly raped and killed in April, 2021.

The court presided over by Justice Bassey Nkanang sentenced Uduak Frank Akpan to death by hanging having found him guilty as charged.

Akpan was arrested after Iniubong’s body was exhumed from a shallow grave.

Commissioner of Police Olatoye Durosinmi expressed delight over the conviction and sentencing of the killer.

“We remain committed to sparing no resources in ensuring that we bring to book perpetrators of violent crimes and other forms of criminalities in the state within the shortest possible time,” police spokesman Odiko MacDon said in statement.

Justice Nkanang ruled that Akpan be hanged by the neck till he died.

The judge, however, discharged and acquitted second and third defendants Frank Akpan and daughter Anwan-Bassey Akpan.
